Hey guys, so i searched a bit but it seems my issue isn't quite the same.
I have a 95 where when cranking, sometimes the starter wont catch so I have to wait for the starter to stop and try again. sometimes 4-5 times before it catches.
I took apart the starter clutch as stated in several threads here but discovered no cracks in the main casing or back plate. I changed out the springs and metal pucks for good measure as they were cheap anyways.
After reassembly I still get the free spinning just as often as before so i feel my issue may be more with the starter itself.

Would anyone be able to chime in with some guidance? im pretty mechanically inclined and am not afraid to get my hands dirty

How fast does the starter spin? It needs to drive that clutch fairly hard to get it to engage. Also have you made sure your battery is good? Some batteries test good on voltage but as soon as you put a load on them they go to crap.

spins pretty fast. when it catches and disengages theres a clunking sound. as for the pattery, how would i go about testing it? voltage doesnt really drop below 12 when cranking.

Feel the surface of the starter clutch where the rollers contact it for gouges/grooves.

Mine was slipping but wasn't cracked, then upon closer inspection I noticed one of my rollers cut a sizeable rut into the backing plate.

    New starter clutch fixed it.

Battery: how old is it? If older than 3yrs then dont bother testing, just replace. These things have a service life for a reason.
Testing: if you put your meter across the battery contacts, at rest (has not done any cranking and has been fully charged and allowed to sit for 30mins before testing) it should read above 12.6 volts. And cranking it should not drop below 11.3 volts. This is an extremely simple test and only tells you if the batter can produce the current within the rated voltage range. If it drops in to the 10 volt or lower range that battery needs replacement.

But im not convinced its the battery. You said it catches and then slips. I think your starter clutch is worn out. If it was my bike I would just get a new one. These things are not meant to be refurbished and any hint of trouble they should be replaced.
The only reason I brought up battery is if your starter doesnt turn fast and hard then the clutch wont grab. The starter clutch is a torque actuated device and relys on that torque to clamp and hold.

That sure is a clean lookin clutch--bet you could eat peaches outa that basket.

Do you have a missing or weak springs--one of them plungers is not visible, maybe stuck back in his hidey-hole?

It does look like the rollers have worn out the slot in the plate up toward the plungers...too much clearance and it spins and can't catch

It's called the primary drive gear guide in the book, and goes between the primary drive gear and the starter clutch assembly. It show the side with the 4 teeth going against the primary drive gear.
