My 84 700 had been sitting all winter with the carbs drained. Is there a good way to fill the carbs back up?
Turn on the bike let fuel flow (if you have a pump then cycle it a couple times) and crank until she tries to start on choke. Let it sit about 5 mins and start the bike. Its a good idea to have a second battery to help as it can take a bit to fill the bowls and prime the passages. Other than that, not much you can do.
Please do not attempt this complicated procedure above until you have had one or two adult beverages first. Rollin
Can't totally agree with Zen on this as there IS something you can do......... Best method is to let the fuel pump fill the carbs completely b4 attempting a start by means of a relay bypass wire. When clicking slows and stops, carbs are full and starting may commence, but it's better to let them soak a few minutes first. Easily filled by funnel too.
That is optional, carbs should fill and allow the engine to start without issue either way. Its just preference. With my little bike I have never needed to run the fuel pump, just let the fuel flow into the carbs then let them rest for a few. If your fuel pump relay comes on with key-on. Then cycle a couple times. It is important to let the carbs sit a few minutes before you try to make the engine idle. This allows the fuel to enter the small passages and expand the seals. Very important or you might think there is something wrong with the carbs when there is nothing wrong.
Another reason to let them sit after filling is to wait to see if any drips start from leaking bowl gaskets or fuel tube O-rings, which could take a few minutes.
+1^ @ squirrel, they like to leak a little when dried out. Need to make sure the leakin stops before ridin...
Hey thanks for the replies- 'appreciate it. Gonna try to start it this weekend. Dumb question: How does the fuel pump work? Does it run when you turn the key on? What shuts it off- back pressure? Does it run all the time when you're riding?
carb I'm not sure but my short experience with the bike indicated that the fuel pump does not start pumping until I hit the starter button. You can check that by disconnecting the hose, turning on the ingition and seeing if the fuel pump turns on and fuel flows.
I read a thread that mentioned shorting the fuel pump relay to fill the bowls but I can't find it. I'm looking at the bike right now and there's 3 wires - blue, black and white going to the relay. The white wire runs from the relay to the fuel pump connector where it turns blue/black. A green wire from somewhere else goes to the fuel pump connector and the wiring diagram says it's a ground. Anybody know how to do it? I'm either going to figure out, or fuck it up. Time for a smoke...
Just calm down and have a smoke LOL!!! _____________}}}___________ ____________{{{{{{_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO_________ __________OOOOOOO______}__ __________OOOOOOO_____{{__ __________OOOOOOO_____(..)__ __________OOOOOOO_____%___ __________OOOOOOO____%_____ __________OOOOOOO___%______ ________OOOOOOOOOO%_______ _______OOOOOOOOOOOO_______ ______OOOOOOOOOOOOOO______ _____OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO______ _____OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO______ ______OOOOOOOOOOOOOO_______ _______OOOOOOOOOOOO________ ________OOOOOOOOOO_________
Damn, that's what I should be smoking. Can't hear the fuel pump come on with the key on- even with a stethoscope.
Well... Squirrelman mentioned mentioned by-passing the relay and I found TOE CUTTER's carb cleaning thread where he talks about jumping the pump at the battery. That worked, you can easily hear the pump working. Let it pump for a little while until it slowed and then stopped. Spent a half hour cranking and letting it rest- nothin'. On a hunch I turned the petcock to RES- fired right off. Don't know if there was some kind of airlock or if it was just ready to go at that point. Don't matter- It runs.
