SV's are great (even though they aren't a Honda). Always recommend them to people looking for a first sporty bike. Made many years, big aftermarket, many parts out there, big online support.

Sounds like a reasonable buy to me too. I don't know much about the SV but they have a good reputation for reliability and your odds of success are much higher than what you wanted from the vf500.

Hope you get your bike man, I hate zukis but I will admit the sv is a much better choice for a daily rider.

Never get near red line when riding it and that's no guarantee you won't break a valve. From what I hear the materials they used manufacturing the valves made the stems weak and around 20,000 + miles the heads of the valves would snap off. Rumor has it the 86 model VF500F's used different valves and they are also line bored for the camshafts.

There were lots of little changes for 86. The deeper sump is the most noticeable external change.

The thermostat housings and related hoses were also larger on the 86's. (still use the same temp sensor)

That's a long haul to do a looksee. I spot some finds up here but they get snapped up real quick.

Missed a Cagiva for not being on top of it right away.

The 500 looks like it might have some real potential in the right hands.

The Oregon Vintage guys up here are pretty sharp and on the prowl..

So today I bought this awesome '06 Ninja 500r for 1800 out the door. See, I learned. Walked away from 5 bikes before landing here.

Great choice. More bike than the Ninja 250, good resale value. (Take care of it and you shouldn't lose money.) Light weight. And you can save up for a nice 5th Gen when you are ready.

Good Score! I bought my 04 in 07 with 1500 miles for $1500. Won't go into the mods you can do here, terrific all around commuter/racer/tourer/cheap-skate bike. Nuff-Sed

if all you want is 50K miles buy it... the V-4 engine should go well into the 100K... mine has about 76K on it and it is an 86 700vfr F2... (not gonna read all the screamers that say don't buy it... its your money.... you have been given sound advise from a lot of knowledgeable people... do what you will.. but please for the sanity of the boards if it goes tits up on you expect to hear the TSK TSK TSK.... good luck..

Thanks guys! Unfortunately I had to ride it home in a torrential downpour, 20 miles on the highway in heavy traffic. But all that did was impress me with the bike.
