I want to get a motorcycle, but the insurance on them, is ridiculous, especially for a 16 year old. I don't want a big bike, so that it is within my abilities to pay for insurance, like a 250-500cc would be more than enough. I want to get full coverage as the primary driver, and so I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what it might cost.
I just want to know so I know if the cost will be more than what a 16 year old can make.
I could also get insurance through my stepfather. I could have him list me as the secondary driver so that it would be a lot cheaper, and I was wondering if anyone had an idea of the cost for that.

I would greatly appreciate answers, or advice. Thank you very much.

Check with Nationwide, they had the cheapest rates for me. Granted I'm much older but check anyway.

What ever you do, don't get discuraged by the first (possibly first few) quotes you get. The first people I called were the folks that carry my car insurance. They wanted$2000! Went to Progressive and got a much lower rate. You may have to do a lot of shopping to get a decent rate.

I also have progressive and I'm happy with the rate.
I think it's like $157 for a year on the Interceptor.
Oh yeah take the safety course and it will save you some $

Man I'm a cop with a perfect driving record and a safety course. Mine runs about $450 thru Geico. I just recieved a quote from e-surance. The quote came in at $260. A lot lower but I'm not sure on the service. I'll let you know. I ride 04 vfr800i with a clean record.

If you get an older, smaller bike, it makes no sense to carry collision insurance anyway, because even if you total it the insurance company will hardly pay a thing. And without the collision insurance it shouldn't be nearly as expensive.

    Progressive here as well!

I also use Progressive for both my Motorcycles as well as my 2001 Chevy Blazer.
I have been very pleased with there service, I had there insurance on my Dodge Dakota when some dick headed low rent bastard pulled right out in front of me and I t-boned him. Was a very low speed crash but still totaled my truck. I had a check from them for the full amount minuse 1000.00 the next day before 5PM.
I got the 1000.00 dollars about a month later plus my insurance didn't go up. So needless to say I was very pleased. I have full coverage on my Interceptor and liability on the Katana and full on the Blazer only cost me total about 135.00 (thats 3 vehicles) a month. I'm sure there might be better deals but I sure do like there service so I will stay for now. Anyway Good Luck ride safe and definitely take the motorcycle safety course.

My father, Reg71, is going to teach me how to ride, and I'll be taking the msf course. I haven't looked too hard for insurance just yet, as I have only JUST turned 16, but I will look harder, and I appreciate the help.

Check with insurance Brokers as they can get quotes from several companies.
Many insurance companies are now using your "credit rating" to base insurance rates on along with driving record. I still dont see how a credit rating should be used to base cost of insurance...

I'm 44, and collect tickets at a rate of about 1 every other year, and I got full coverage on my '03 for about $280 a year from progressive. They offered a quote on the 3 cars and came in at 4 to 5 times what I'm currently paying. WTF?????? I think some one is just picking numbers off a wheel when you call.

I agree on this advice. I carry only liability because my bike is old. If it gets totalled it will either not be worth fixing or I will fix it myself. If it was restored to perfection that would be different of course. I pay $98 a year and I have a ticket still on my DMV report. As others have said it is worth it to spend the time shopping around. It helps to find a good insurance broker as well. The quotes my broker pulled up ranged from the $98 I pay to over $200 for basic liability. I had a bad experience with another broker so talk to several, some are much better at their jobs than others. The second driver/stepfather route will probably be cheapest considering your age especially for higher coverage I would imagine.

    I totally agree!

My first bike was a 1980 Kawasaki 440 in great condition! I was 22 years old and my insurance was $130.00 per year for fire, theft, and liability. My own insurance agent said full coverage on a machine that old is a waste of money because they would just "total" the bike instead of the pay out.

A friend of mine has a 2001 Suzuki GS500E, and his insurance is $130.00 per year too! Great bike by the way. I had it for a month at my place in Delaware and I can't say enough good things about it.

So look for 500 cc's and under and buy the bike outright if possible and your insurance won't kill you.

Welcome Jenkins-- I am sure your Dad has struggled with this one of you riding. I don't know you, or him for that matter, but most young men I do not believe are ready to ride at 16, due to maturity. My best friend started road riding then, and he's the best rider we know, but he's also wadded at least 8 bikes partially just from being so damn comfortable in the saddle. BE CAREFUL your EGO can really write checks that skills can't cash,,,,Never ride angry or upset or god forbid wasted.... Good luck man, on the insurance Progressive crushes everyone at least in VA.

Get the MSF course done & out of the way.
What insurance Co. does your father have ?

I've got Farmers, I own 3 suv's, & 12 bikes that are all fully covered & pay $196.00 per month, & when I say fully covered, I mean every thing including Un-insured, under-insured, "replacement vehicle coverage", $250,000/$500,000 liability.

My daughter got her "own" policy(not on mine) with farmers & since her grades are 3.0 or better, she gets a discount, since I'm covered with them, she gets a huge discount, & she has the same coverage as mine (Major coverage) & is paying $81.00 per month.
she's 17, & doesn't have the MSF (yet, she's signed up though) but has been riding & racing since 3.5 yrs old.

    Super Cheap

I found the cheapest rates through the online broker AIS. They are a clearing house for a lot of smaller insurance companies that have better rates. I am paying a ridiculously low $180 a year. I don't have coverage on my own bike, just coverage in case I wreck into someone else; as well as no theft insurance (I always garage my bike). Removing those two things made it a lot cheaper. Good luck.

I started riding at the ripe old age of 16, on a 85 vf500 magna. I was on my dad's plan and had only liability. I don't remember exactly what the price was but I believe it was around 25 a month. not bad considering. everyone on here has said the right things:
1- start with an older, smaller displacement bike.
2- your friends will only be "impressed" with your skills when you crash, no monkey stuff
3- go on all rides with your old man, he'll show you lots of things.
4- be patient, your odometer doesn't lower your rates, only time.
I have full coverage on VFR and my truck, liability+uninsured motorist+theft on the RVF and 954, and renters insurance all for 100 a month at the ripe-er age of 26. only time, training, and a clean record will lower your rates. good luck.

I just wanted to let everyone know, I got my first bike that I intend to ride. It's a 1989 Ex500. It's in good shape, and it only set me back $1000, which conveniently, was all I had. I'm not a "new rider" yet, but once I get the MSF course out of my way, I will be. Some of you might remember when I posted for help with a beginner bike, and I just wanted to thank you guys for the help there. Thanks for all the help everyone, and I hope to be an active member eventually.
