Yup. BMW sure has a lock on the mechanical moral high ground. It was well known in racing circles the S1000 R had connecting rod issues that led to lunched engines and crashes. Those Great German Moralists ignored the issue UNTIL...five people were taken out by the same failure on a track. And what tune do you think Beemer Boss (what Engineering University did HE graduate from?) is singing with 50,000 Bavarian-built motorcycle recalls THIS YEAR ALONE for faulty fuel pumps that can burst into flames?

Point is: No brand has a total lock on quality or safety. I hate to defend H-D since I'm not generally a fan of the Motor Co's products or Willie G. & the Pirates. But I gotta say... haters gonna hate. Jeez, get over it.

His recollections came for the 60 through the AMF days, a time of well documented pitiful quality for HD. There was talk here of the 700cc tariff days and if anything Harley used this breathing space to bring their products up to world standards. Harley is not the same manufacture it was back then. It is a pitty that many of the British brands could not make the same transition. Most everything from the 60s and 70s, cars and bike alike, had manufacturing or design issues.

What amazed my boss, after a life time on Harley's and Indians was the fact that he could ride his R100RT from Oklahoma to BC and back and never break out the tool kit, never have to pull over because of a mechanical issue and never have to even check the oil. He was doubly amazed when a customer burned up the engine in a brand new R100RS and BMW just sent us a brand new engine (complete with carbs) no questions asked. He said "Harley would have grudgingly sent some parts if they couldn't have blamed the customer for the failure first." Yep haters gotta hate but I was just using this thread to write about someone who I loved as a father and who I still miss every day.

What a wonderful sentiment. Didn't mean to pee on your parade. Apologies

You are right Mr. Billy. I should have said the LA drainage system. I used to live in Long Beach/San Pedro area where some of that is. Also some really nasty chemical and refinery plants are. where it seems to be the got to place for Hollywood to set "the bleak future world" industrial scenes.

As for the ketchup as a vegetable reference, cue up the Reagan years where catsup was declared a veggy for school lunch program dietary standards. And who could forget James Watts? Forgive me, I'm part tree hugger.

Back on topic: HD has come a long way from Those days. The only company I can think of that puts them to shame for marketing ancillary bullshit is Disney. Of course they have more and varied "product" to mine. What cracks me up but also disgusts me are the HD souvenir shops that sell crap only. No bikes just retail outlets and some static bikes wannabes can sit on and take pics. It's all sooooo fun! I still have a couple discount Harley tees from HD of Kokomo.

Spent many formative years between Long Beach and San Pedro. Specifically, "Wilmas", a gentle and refined area of Greater Los Angeles..;) Not only storage and refineries but for years companies like Johns-Manville were processing asbestos unfettered by any regs.

Predating Ronnie, Nixon was a fan of ketchup on his avocados. Never seen that about Ronnie doing the veggie boogie on ketchup, No surprise though. James Watt was most famous for the development of the steam engine. Probably never ate an avocado in his life. Then again Nixon or Ronnie never ate haggis either.

Some of the larger botiques that actually sell bikes have stuff in there that ya have to ask what it is. Toddler do rags are just the beginning. I hope you are talking T-shirts and not HD golf tees.. If so and if they do exist, I will buy several to use in my collection of Harley Barbie and chicken sacrifice kits.

Buried somewhere here on or around 4/1 of some year is a HD/Disney thing I wrote whilst under the spell of some fine aged Tequila con limon Y sal. Maybe somebody can find it, I can't even figure out all that generational stuff much less revisionist history of my own making.

Your father was a Harley? That had to be traumatic. Willie G is still grand poobah of The Company and in fact a great designer. One of the Harley children is a mailman.

Anyone thinking your father was a motorcycle is probably a harleydood.

James Watt was most famous for the development of the steam engine. That he was!! A different James Watts was secretary of the interior appointed by Ronald Reagan. Had plans to sell off large swaths of our national park system to the highest bidder. Gee now, doesn't that sound familiar?

At the time it was probably a good idea as far as Ronnies crew was in power. About that same time they were pushing for a Ronnie on Mt. Rushmore.

One of the great preservers of our National Park system giving credit to Teddy Roosevelt who probably would have clobbered Reagan with his big stick, was photo icon Ansel Adams. This in much more than just his mastery of landscape photography.

Had Secretary Watts had his way (with backing of course) we could have had parks named after things like Walmart, Dairy Queen, Trojan Condoms, and other nifty products including HD..

Lots of trees here. The hugging potential is enormous. Gotta tell ya when one of those double semis loaded with some bigass logs goes around me doing way over the limit, my hug factor turns into pucker factor in a hurry.

I have not personally seen this film but "Bedtime for Bonzo" is one of my alltime favorites. We all know that our past prez has gone to the Great White House In the Sky. Bonzo still lives and is now president of The all simian chapter of HOG.

Long ago there were some rhymes
    Of riding styles and waving

As time goes by we note
    That scene is ever changing

The couplets told of scooter wavers
    Wavers to a man

    And different signs ricerocketeers display
    Waving if they can

To others too who chose to never raise
    A warm or friendly hand

It told (the poem) the poet's tale
    His style of waving: back

To all who chose to wave at him
    He always would wave back

    A small exception was
    If we travel back

Was not to wave at harleydoods
    At anytime

With milk crates on their racks

    As recounted without contention
    Necessity the mother of invention
    And quite possibly t'was required
As the HD parts guy was fired
And the owner not a hawg
    For attention.

    PETA folks lament animal enslaving,
But I call it energy saving,
    As I've installed my dog
On the back of my hog
And let him do most of the waving. [IMG]
