Hi guys. Does anyone know if a 6th generation fuel tank will fit a gen 5 bike? My 98 has a dented tank and I haven't had much luck finding a used tank in excellent condition. The gen 6 tanks seem to be much more common and the ones on Ebay sure look the same to me.

    Thanks

Yes, it will fit but you will need to drill new mount holes at the pivot plate.

So do you know if the tanks have the same dimensions other than the mounting hole configuration?

If I remember correctly, you also need to trim the side fairings a little bit.

I have a spare 5th gen tank with small dent that I'd sell for $50 plus shipping. Then you could get one or the other fixed to like new and sell off the old one. That's why I have an extra.

Go with the 6gen tank. The styling is better and there's roughly a half gallon more capacity.

There's some minor trimming of plastic up near the front because the tank is wider at that point. I used the 6 gen tank hinge assembly because I was using the 6th subframe. Otherwise everything else is interchangeable and fits up. Minor tweak to the 5th hinge to fit the 6th tank as I remember it. The link in my signature has pics (I started with a 5th tank and switched to 6th before the project was done). I'll see if I can find pics to link directly.

The extra capacity of the gen 6 tank sounds great. My concern is that the paint won't look right. I've got the red paint on my 98. Anyone know if the 6th generation red is the same color code?
