OK, I'll admit that I have no life. I live out in the middle of nowhere and my interactions with people are limited. I keep in touch through my keyboard.

On Monday I had some computer issues. I use Firefox and it refused to load. I did the recommended fix and reinstalled Firefox which seemed to fix the problems but I discovered another one. VFRWorld.com would not load. It would chew on the page but never actually connect. I used my wife's machine with the same result. I tried IE and Chrome, same result. I had friends try to hit the site from other locations and they were just fine. This went on until just now when I rebooted my machine for the 20th time.

I felt rising panic because, as I told my wife, all my friends are here! I felt truly cut off from civilization.

Your using a router to connect multiple computers I assume. How do you get internet? Dsl, cable, fiber optic? All of these use a form of nat (network address translation) host routing. This is usually set up with a dhcp host so that your computer just gets an address and the internet works. Common problem is that now you add a router and it does nat and dhcp hosting, this double nat can cause strange issues. Especially with windows which looks at how the network is setup via microsoft servers. It knows what your outside ip is and what the inside ip is and from some routers and provider equipment can get all sorts of information about the network. Now add windows ability to screw up and hold an invalid entey in its own route table and you have an issue that can last for days no matter how often its rebooted.

Simple process, unplug modem, unplug router and let windows see that there is no connection. Then after a minute, start at thw modem and plug it in. Wait until it has a network connection then plug in the router and do the same. Windows will see the network come back up and then want to talk to it. So it will start at square 1 and flush the route table and dns cache. Presto. Internet works.

Stupid but simple, best of all no windows settings to play with.

I was starting to exhibit withdrawal symptoms, panic attacks, shortness of breath and the feeling like something is missing in my life.

I could hit the site on my phone but I think you have to by under 30 to enjoy typing a whole message with your thumbs.

    I am better now.
