Sucks for your buddy, but great for you! I think it was a steal at $600.00. It doesn't look that bad from the pics. Congrats!

Sorry to hear about what happened to your friend but good to know that he is happy the bike is going to you. Like Jev said, it looks as though there is some damage but not overly bad considering.

If you need to order any parts for it, I would try using www.hondapartsnation.com. I have purchased parts from these guys before and though they may not be the cheapest online OEM parts supplier, they were the least expensive when it came to shipping costs to Canada.

Welcome aboard, that's a scoop you got. Aside from a new center piece the rest can probably be fixed (a bonus that the tabs seem to be in place, and the headlight looks ok) A little piece of advice is, make sure the top fairing frame is straight before you put it all together. Mine is slightly tweaked and as a result the gaps are off.

Thanks for coming back with pictures of your new VFR - that must have been quite a shock for your friend to trap the thief in the garage!

Those pictures don't suggest the damage was too serious, even so if you have friends who are able to restore the bike then I am sure they will give the critical stuff - frame, forks, brakes etc. a careful check to ensure they are in good order.

Oh don't be tempted to change the colour or you will knock 10mph off the top speed! Red is definitely the fastest colour :potstir:.

    :vtr2::vtr2::vtr2::vtr2::vtr2:

Take care and thanks for posting

the frame and forks are fine as they were checked by the motorcycle shop the bike was brought to for the estimate of damages, the bike was auctioned off as non branded, I offered it back to my friend after the auction but he said it wouldn't be the same if he had it back,

I am going to disagree that the damages are not significant... but $600 for a 9800 mile '96 is pretty awesome.

I see the following parts requiring replacement (or skillful plastic welding):
    Left upper
Right upper (I'm pretty sure you're going to have to replace this one)
    Front middle
Front fender (I have one, BTW - PM me if you want it)

It appears that the headlight is holding the entire upper fairing assembly together, but with a punch to the nose like she's endured - I'd wager that not all of the tabs are intact...

I'd also be checking those forks personally...

Thankfully, it appears that both mid fairings are intact. Those are the really pricey ones!!!

Wow... for 600$ that's quite the steal.
Crazy story you got there too to accompany the bike.
Fix everything up and you'll be good to go... Doesn't look like much damage anyway.

Bikes like that commonly sell for up to $2000 at auction or buy-back from the insurance company.

update today, police said guy has pled guilty and most likely get time served ( 3 months) guy was on probation and has a lengthy record including some violent crimes, scary thing is then he saw my friends wife he rushed at her before she shut the door and locked him in, with his history it could have been lot worse, our legal system is a joke, he caused about $40000+ in damages to the car the bike ,the garage door and everything in the garage he threw or smashed in trying to get out and will get a slap on the wrist, its not just the monetary damages but the emotional damages he has caused

finally got the bike home, damage is not as bad as expected, im replacing the two upper cowl and middle, i could have probably repaired those but they were missing a piece on each side that had broken off, im painting the middle right cowl, only other damage is a bent brake pedal, can bend that back no bent brackets , so for about $800 in parts and the cost of the paint, i,ll post some pics shortly

Great deal on the bike. definitely pics soon!

everytime I come back to this thread, kinda creeps me out. Your friend's wife definitely sounds like she got really lucky! I have an old house and garage has a huge window in it. Wife's home alone alot when I'm late at work. with the random break in reports in my neighborhood, I think I'll be framing that window in when I replace the siding this spring. Already welded in some bars in the windows for now. Can always replace my bikes and tools but I don't think I can find another woman that would put up with me.
