I have the gas tank off of my 84 VFkR. I bought the bike a month or so ago, and the previous owner had let it sit up for several years.

I took the tank off, and just tried to drain it from the normal drain line. Nothing came out. I added more gas to ensure that I was above the drain point of the tank. I then blew on the drain line, and I could hear the gas bubbling in the tank.

So my question is this. Is there some kind of check valve in the tank drain system that is normally overcome by the vacuum pulled by the fuel pump? I can think of no other reason for it not to gravity drain. Anybody know what the inside looks like?

And fwiw, the tank is pretty bad. Gonna take at least a cleaning and maybe a sealant. I took a peek with an inspection camera and there was rust all over the inside.

    Thanks for your help.

I had the same with my gas tank on the V1KR.....

LOTS of rust.... Even blocked the pipes.

Some fuel and blowing with a very thin pipe as far as possible into the passages eventually cleared it out and the fuel is flowing freely.

Doing the electrolysis process this weekend to remove the rest of the rust. Link to the process below.

I will let you know and also take some pics afterwards....

The por-15 motorcycle tank kit is prohibitively expensive in South Africa.. Totals up to around the equivalent of US $240.

    Good luck with yours!!

I had the same problem with mine. I used a small, flexible wire and basically snaked out the tube, blow it out with air, covering the cap with my hand and just giving it short bursts. Used MetalRescue on mine as well. You may have to do this quite a few times, but it will clean up.
