There is a reason the 1998 VFR800 (5th gen) was chosen as Motorcycle Of The Year back in the day. Congrats on a great find! Finding one that clean and all original is a gift!

I also had an '01 like yours which I resurrected from a life of hardship and misery. I loved and took great care of that bike until sand on the road took her from me in 2008.

Yeah that beautiful sound.....I don't think there is anything that sounds better. Yamaha had to copy it. Aprilia gets it. :tickled_pink:

I replaced my exhaust with a Two Brother's CF can in blingy gold. I was torn between love and anxiety about it. It was loud even at idle but OMFG it sounded beautiful at all RPM's. When I went WOT it was like NASCAR. When you're riding the mountains and canyons of California and you hear that exhaust booming alongside you, it was music. But dang! Every CHP and Sheriff with a radar gun had me in their sights well before I round a corner. EVERYONE knows you're coming or going even when you're just taking it easy.

Here was mine with the shot of the 2 Bros. CF Can:

Nice to hear you are happy with yours.

Have to agree with the previous post, when the 5th Gen came out in '98 due to its exceptional all round ability some magazines of the time labeled it " Best bike on the Planet ". Having owned mine 8 1/2 years and 45K miles still think of it as the " Best bike on the Planet " although admit regular servicing, an Ohlins Rear shock and Sports biased tires have kept it that way.

Got delivery of the Oxford X60 soft saddlebags, did a test fit. Need some new straps and do something to protect the paint but I am happy overall. IMG_3954.jpg IMG_3953.jpg

    Hey Cinelliguy

Might I suggest some 3M clear vinyl paint protector. I have some on my lower cowls and the upper cowl to protect the headlight and upper fairing from rock chips and works very well. The stuff is all but invisible and if it starts to wear out from abrasion with the soft bags it can be easily removed and replaced.

I'm just thinking of getting a set of luggage for some touring this summer ; as far as I can see the hard ones are too expensive . I'm wondering if those will do the job ...for say a 2 weeks tripper between cities .

I purchased an identical 01 two summers ago...it had 5500 miles on it and was like new...It now has a little over 18,000 miles on it and it is an absolute keeper...I go through tires as I ride like my scalp is on fire (no hair)...only owned two bikes in my life...the vfr and previously a magna...zp...

Brother I could not even agree with you more. I have had a few sport bikes back in the late 80's. Been on Goldwings since then. I got this VFR as a way to take my mind of my wife and I splitting up. This bike has opened me up to new freedom's I could never have expected before. Even on the Goldwing. It's responsive, nimble, tucks into the curves, etc. She may not be a speed demon like a Busa or GSXR100, but she can hold her own. 26K miles and I am hoping to get another 200K out of it.
