Hello all. I recently had an issue with my temp sensor display on my 1999. I was riding back from a camping trip and realized the temp was going all over the place, ranging from 205 all the way down to 145, the temp outside was only 65. After the temp varying for a while the gauge dashed out. So without doing any trouble shooting i threw a new temp sensor at it. After the install started the bike up and still no temp indication. I havent boiled and ohmed the old sensor yet to see if it was good or not. And i know it can happen, but i find it hard to believe to have a bad from stock sensor. Thats the first issue. The next is when i started the bike after the sensor install, it ran like crap for about five seconds and then cleared up with the FI light blinking twice in a row. The trouble shooting tree points toward the MAP sensor. Im just trying to see if its just a coinsidence that the MAP sensor failed also or i might have messed something up in the process. If anyone could help out on both issues it would be much appreciated. The last thing i want to do is start chasing wires! Thanks again

You might want to check the charging voltage. There have been reports that charging issues have caused display problems, FI lights (false or otherwise). In any case, it's always good to periodicaly check the charging system on a VFR.

As Mr. Sleep said, check your charging system. Check the regulator/rectifier, and follow all those wires to the connection to/from the stator. You'll need to have a fuly charged battery, then check voltage at off, idle and 5000rpms. You should see off and idle at 12.6 to 13.2, and then anywhere above 2000rpms up to 5000 should hold steady in the low to mid 14's.

When my R/R began to fail (the second time), I was getting all sorts of false codes, including the MAP sensor (and Baro sensor, and speed sensor... etc.).

Before you throw any more money at it, check the charging.
