If everything went OK, you can see a picture of my new bike, an 84 VF1000.

It belonged to a good friend (now, a very, very, good friend) that is something of a collector. He is down to 15 bikes after today. The VF1000 was in his top 2 or 3, but he kept it as a collectable, as opposed to using it day to day. For 12 years, I have asked him to sell me the bike. I never pushed too hard, but I mentioned it as often as possible.

A month ago, I was laid off from my job. I immediately scheduled a knee replacement on my right knee that I had been needing for about 10 years.

5 days after the layoff notification, my friend, not knowing of the layoff, sent me a text message out of the blue telling me that I could come pick it up when ever I was ready. When I told him about the layoff, he told me that he would hold the bike for as long as I needed.

I assumed that, including the knee recovery, it would be late Febuary before I could start back to work. I had the money in hand to pay for the bike, but I didn't want to stress the wife with a purchase that she wasnt crazy about to begin with, while not having a job.

At 6:00 this evening, my wife, kids and grandson all walked into the house and handed me a christmas gift. Inside was the owners manual and the title to the bike. I was stunned, to say the least.

It was already dark, so the picture is substandard, but I will have my Nikon focused on it first thing in the morning.

In summary, its a 1984 VF1000, 18,000 miles. Starter is dead, and battery is toast. Gas tank and fuel system needs to be drained. Need a new gasket on the petcock. Other things prevent it from running, but they will just have to be hunted down. Paid $1100.

It is pretty clean, there is some paint worn on the gas tank. There is no real body damage that I know of. Never been dropped, as far as I can see, but you never really know.

More info to follow, and I am happy to join you guys.

    I'm a lucky guy.

Welcome. Looks pretty good for $1100. Good luck with the knee. I look forward to seeing the cleanup process.

You might consider hanging on to that girl.

I do enjoy every opportunity to give out advice to help out our new arrivals here so why not start right off. This bike is not for you. You should rid yourself of it asap and before you start dumping money into it. The thought is what really counts in gift giving so you should not sweat the loss of money so much. Crate it up and ship it off to me. I will dispose of it in a very environmentally friendly manner.

    Randy,
I really understand your point of view, and I actually agree with you.

    HOWEVER...

...It really would breaak my wife's heart if I were to part with the gift that she just got me. Really, it would be exceedingly greedy of my to take away the joy that the "Gift of Giving" gave my wife. I just couldn't do that to her with a clear conscience.

So I will buckle down with the buden of this bike. Pray for me.
