Here a couple photos from my very notchy steering neck bearings. Replaced the nasty ball bearings with All Balls tapered roller bearings. Like a new bike! Ball bearings basically fell out when I removed the front end.[IMG][IMG]

Horrors !!:livid::rolleyes: Clearly some owner didn't believe in routine maintenance. :mechanic::grief:

Inspect the races and balls under 10X magnification to see jaw-dropping physical chaos on the surfaces !!!

    Mileage ??:disturbed:

Other than obvious grinding when steering, what would the symptoms be of worn head set bearings? I will take your word for it Squirrel and leave it alone. My stock of 18 and 20 year old is diminishing and may not have enough to complete the job. Fixed income and all you understand.

She has 50k on her. Also needs front wheel bearings. Steering is like a new bike! I didn't even know what I was missing.

Seldom gets as bad as any grinding noise. A KLUNK from the front end just before stopping is one indication. Others are only obvious once the front wheel is off the ground and you push/pull on the fork bottoms feeling for looseness, then turn the bars lock-to-lock feeling for any notches or detents, usually around the straight ahead position.

My experience suggests that VFR headsets are knackered and due for replacement by about 35-40,000 miles. Only way to extend mileage is periodic re-greasing.........just as the service manual councils.

I didn't mean to put you off, Randy, and i believe you could get 'er done if you have decent tools and enough time to lay your bike up for a few days. U have a centrestand ??

I used All Balls because they're cheap and are the tapered roller bearings. Not sure if Honda updated the ball bearing type. I also get a good deal on All Balls through the shop I work at. Seem to be working excellent. Only been a few hundred miles so I don't have a valid opinion on the matter yet.

Fixed income, Randy?? Ride out to a mall and start working as Santa Claus this season instead of eatin pancakes an boozin on yer butt ? You already have the fine red suit ! Haven't outgrown it yet ?

No Chinese bearings for me, no matter how cheap ! :nelson:

Plan on taking the lower triple to a competent 'cycle shop where they can easily remove/replace the lower bearing inner race on the steering stem.
