Battery died - running First Gear heated vest and gloves. Haven't had this problem before - wondering if VFR idling has enuf juice to power both gloves and vest. Was riding in city where revs stay pretty low and had gear on. Battery old and going to replace. Also - was unable to jump bike with 300 amp battery jumper. bike took no power in - any thoughts? battery jumper good

A healthy battery can ran all the gears without any problem. maybe it time for you to replace the battery.
If you want to jumb using a car make sure the engine is NOT on

If the battery is healthy and the problem still exist, you might want to take a look at your stator......

    changed stator

changed it recently. i think prob is battery. also noticed i had loose negative lead. ordered new battery and got new screw to hold it tight . . . thanks for the response. the jumper is an independent unit - u turn it on. not sure why it didn't work.

All 4 elements of the VFR charging system - stator, RR, Battery and loom need to be in good health, and a fault in any one can cause damage to the others. So once you fit the new battery its worth doing some basic checks with a multi-meter to ensure nothing else is in trouble. This thread will tell you the basics of what to check for.

Fingers crossed things will be fine with the new battery but if not follow the link in the second post to Rubo's thread which explains how to troubleshoot a VFR with electrical gremlins.

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

At and around idle speed even a good charging system won't be adding enough power to battery + heated gear to keep the bike running long, especially if the fan is running.

Did you get lights to come on when you jumped ??
