Clicking engine problem

    I have done a little research but I was hoping for more specific answers. My 02 VFR w/ 44000 miles on her clicks when it is cold and what seems like after high RPMs. Once the bike is warm the noise is gone. The clutch has no effect on the sound. It seems to go away if I leave it at idle for long enough. Any help/troubleshooting is appreciated

    When was your last oil change? Is it suddenly colder where you are?

    last oil change was 3000 ago. I live in Milwaukee so it has been gradually getting colder. It clicked in warm weather too but stopped sooner due to the engine warming up faster i would assume

    Maybe cam chain tensioners? I have heard they can be a problem on the 6th gen. Having a 5th gen i wouldnt know a lot about that. Gotta love gear driven cams. Worst thing i think honda did to the 6th gen was to get rid of them.

    I was thinking it could be a hydraulic lifter that isn't pumping up. If it is, it might be a rather benign noise.

    My vulcan had a noisy lifter from day one that made noise until it warmed up. It freaked me out but mechanics I spoke to always said the wear from it would be nominal- just not to ride it too hard until it warmed up.

    You could try draining a little oil and topping up with a lighter weight to see if it goes away (hydraulic lifter pumps up quicker).

    Does it reappear if you shut down the hot bike and wait 15 minutes? (But then diminish in noise a lot quicker).

    Try you tube and listen to vfrs or similar bikes with cam tensioner issues or sticking valves. That can help clue you in.

    The vfr does not have lifters. It has shim adjust valves.

    I have heard about CCT many times. Can someone give me more info on that? is there a fool proof way to figure out that is what it is for sure? Are there any other possibilities?

    If it was something in the cylinder wouldn't it always click? not just when it is cold? It always seems to stop clicking around 165 degrees

    I could be way off base here and my ears are not as good as they used to be but it sounds like an exhaust leak to me. Check the tightness of the header pipes where they mount to the engine. Do this when it is cold. They will tighten up when hot. Don't over torque. Cheap thing to check.

    Otherwise I have no idea.

    Im almost 100% sure that is a loose cam chain tensioner.

    Get a solid piece of wood like a hammer handle, actually a hammer works well, and put the wooden end at different locations on the engine. Put your ear to the other end and listen. You should be able to pinpoint the location of the noise.
