Worked on my newly acquired VF1000f and she is in pretty bad shape on the outside but frame, motor and tranny all seem intact.
    I am going to do:
    -Compression test
    -Check for spark
-Cleans carbs and see if I can get it to run
I plan on soaking carbs in diesel for a couple of week to see if all the gunk will come out. Have used this before on other no motorcycle carbs seems to work good.
The bike has been down very hard on left side and even lower fork is damaged, rad is damaged. All mechanical parts are there including the ignition key.
This could be a very long process, and will keep you all updated.

    Nice pics.

It will be great if you manage to get her running - that looks quite some project. If the motor is dead I guess you could borrow one from the jet ski.

It's unlikely your carbs need a full baptism like soaking unless they've been submerged under water for awhile previously, damaged by a flood for example. A simple hand cleaning followed by compressed air, paying special attention to the jet hole openings, is sufficient in almost all cases of dirty carbs. Check fuel tank for signs of rust so you don't allow more crap getting back into carbs after cleaning.:tranquillity:

Of course, if compression looks bad, you're pretty much done.

Does anyone on here have a running VF1000f? is worth the effort to restore this machine? How do they compare to todays big bikes. I paid $300 bucks for it and if I have to spend another 1000 or so I think I would have a nice bike to mate with my very nice VF750F.

My VFK is running GREAT! The engine pulls hard from idle to 10K with over 70,000 miles. I would try to get the big VF running and restore it.....not too many of them around and yours looks like it's mostly all there. Ebay has several being parted out at any given time.

As far as a comparison to todays 1000's...no contest....my CBR1000RR is way stronger and handles much better. The only thing is the satisfaction of riding a bike that you simply don't see everyday. I usually get asked about it and that makes all the work I put into the monster worth it. One more thing....the VFK is very comfortable for me. I can ride it all day without feeling like I got run over by a Mack truck with tinted windows!

If you have the time and $ I think it's worth it. My simple opinion.

I bought mine disassembled and in boxes last year. luckily for me whoever took it apart kept just about everything. Bearings are all but impossible to find. You can get gasket sets from Athena, MOST engine/tranny seals are available. Pistons and rings are available( but pricey). Make sure your fuel tank lines are clean when checking pump, system. Most of the bodywork can be had off ebay, some looks to be pretty good. It took a lot of patience and searching but it was worth it. Ask questions, there are some guys here that have a lot of info. I will try to help as much as I can. Good luck with the build. vf1000 first ride day 8-13-13 019.jpg
