    hey

So i seem to have an odd problem. My 90 VFR appears to be "overheating" but the fan does not kick on according to what the temp gauge reads. Once the bike warms up, the temp gauge will jump up when I come to a stop or kill the engine with the electrial still on. If I rev the engine, it drops back to where it should be. Sometimes I notice when I have a blinker on or am operating the brake lights, the needle moves with the lights. I am thinking this means there is a short somewhere, and most likely in the temp sender since it only happens once the bike is up to temp. Any one have thoughts on this??? Thanks!

Symptom of poor ground, not a short.

Can you reach in and spin the fan blades by hand to check if it spins freely or binds? If the fan is frozen then current could flow when hot and pull down your system voltage, hence the needle movement with the blinker.

In addition to checking all the ground connections at chassis and battery terminal, Check the connectors into the Rectifier/Regulator for signs of arcing or heat, melting ,etc. Also those going into the main 30A fuse block/starter relay.

All good advise here, you can also hot wire the fan to see if it is running. Sometime a good clean up around the motor and the sensor will help.

The fan does work. Sorry for the confusion. When the bike actually gets hot, the fan does kick on. Whatever the issue is, it makes the temp gauge read/show much hotter than it is. The main fuse block is new as of this week, and that didn't change the issue. It did give me more HP, which is fun. R/R was done 3 years ago (right after I bought the bike) along with new marine grade connectors for the main fuse block, as well as a finned R/R from 1990 Honda VFR750F Street Bike OEM Style Honda Rectifier-Regulator Aftermarket Parts which has worked out great. I will check out the connector to it when I get a chance. I also lost my digital copy of the service manual, so I can't look up where the ground points are. Can someone tell me where they are, or send me a copy of the service manual .pdf since I cannot seem to download if off the site. Thanks for all the insight!
