My clutch lever had been a bit finicky for awhile and finally one morning I threw the bike in gear and she wanted to take off with the clutch lever held. Pulled the slave cylinder and it was leaking around the piston. Kinda rusty looking. I replaced the fluid 2-3 years ago and I think I used Vavoline Syn Power. All it says on the bottle is it exceeds dot 3 & 4. I know the FSM says to use Dot 4. I guess I didn't do a good job cleaning out the old fluid and this stuff mixed with it and finally blew through the seals? I got the replacement parts for the slave, but should I get a new master piston set (#3 on fiche)?

Even if I should get a new master piston, I want to get this back together since I haven't ridden her for what feels like 2 months. The spiders are taking over. What fluid would you guys recommend. Just plain old Dot 4 of any brand?

I don't see this on the fiche but is there any way to replace the window? Mine is faded and cracked from sun damage.

This is when I first pulled the slave.

Watch crystal for the window. I would replace all the seal and have a good clean on the piston.

Did you use wd40 or some other type of petroleum based cleaner 2-3 years ago when you changed the fluid?

Petro will ruin brake system parts...

That's the problem with syn brake fluids. They don't absorb moister so the water separates by itself and rusts parts. Use a DOT4 fluid in street vehicles. Syn is really for racing, cause it gets changes all the time. Or change your fluid at least once a year.

Clean well with a cut off q-tip and a paper towel, avoid using wd-40 and other shit that may mix with your fluid. In my experience, I have not had luck re-building slave cylinders. Clutch side always get dirty faster than brake side, you can suck oot the old fluid and do a quick fluid swap with a turkey baster or some type of syringe...just have a spray bottle of water on hand in case you spill any on your paint, as water nuetralizes nasty brake fluid. Cheers and good luck...

Yep, had to add something, you can take the master clutch side off and remove lever and pry oot the little rubber do-hickey thing and inspect if the piston is leaking there. Usually it has that white crystalized shit, if it does, a rebuild kit from honda is in order. If not, if it were me, I would buy a new slave cylinder with crush washers and be done with it...

What speedbleeder # is used on the slave?

No, I didnt use wd40 to clean it last time, I probably didnt do a good job cleaning everything in the first place. The slave IS getting a complete rebuild.

The online catalog is recommnending the SB125 but I would forgo that and use the SB125L --- It has a longer nipple for the bleed hose to hook on to and less prone to fall off. -- I learned the hard way.
