My clutch cover is slightly pitted and oxidized. I want it to look as close to new as I can, with the polished look.

Anyone have any recommendations for that? Thanks!

    I've got an 83 VF750F
Repainted the covers with Black VHF spray paint and baked them in the oven around 350 for about 40 minutes
House smelled like paint for about a week but it's been over 5 years and they still look good

If it's polished aluminum (as I suspect it is), wet sanding the bare aluminum with 1000-1500-2000 grit will bring it back.

Just be sure to keep it wet at all times, and sand with the grain of the aluminum.

After you've brought it back, treat it with a bare metal polish, and keep up with it, as it will return to it's pre-sanded state quickly if neglected.

I tried polishing mine out using McGuires Metal Polish and it didn't do a damned thing. Mine aren't bad but I was flushing the clutch system so thought I would try to polish it up at that time. So when I try this again, I will try this method. Thanks.

What do you think about giving it a clear coat of lacquer after the polish to sustain the shiny finish?

If you sand the cover as VT suggested, making sure to go with the grain on the aluminum, you can polish it up afterwards using a product called jewelers rouge. It comes in short bars and usually comes in a varying selection of grits. You can get felt wheels that can be attached to a drill (corded might be better so that you don't kill a battery on a large surface) and you may be able to find some of the products at your local auto parts store. If not, Eastwood does offer a couple kits on their website. I used a kit to polish up the driver and passenger foot peg brackets on my 97 VFR and they turned out great (though it did take a while) and the products were fairly easy to use.

Here is a video done by Eastwood that shows some of the basics on how to use the jewelers rouge. The video is painfully long but it contains a lot of good tips.

You can sand as the above posts suggest, and polish with some cheap, simple pads and compounds from Harbor Freight. This is what I have done, finish and maintain with Mothers aluminum polish. Only takes me a few minutes if I think it is starting to darken. 094.jpg
