I went to Honda dealer to get parts for newly acquired 1984 VF750F. I was very surprised to find out the bike is obsolete and Honda in Canada anyway supplies almost no parts for the bike. I even check U.S. Honda sights, same story. All the timing components are obsolete, radiator, cooling fan, starter button and on and on.
So I was looking at an 83 night hawk as a winter project and called the dealer, same story obsolete and almost no parts support from Honda.
How can they do this? I can buy dealer parts for every car, truck, etc back to the last 50 years almost.
Is Yamaha and the others doing the same thing? I just find it hard to fathom that Honda would not provide parts support for the hundreds of thousands of bikes they have sold. I would also like a newer bike next spring, I was thinking a 2000 VFR800, will I be able to get parts for it or is it already obsolete.

Yes the older the bike the harder to get parts, you might want to try Fleebay

I think you are being a little hard on Honda here. Ford, Chrysler and GM do not continue to make parts for older vehicles. They supply parts for a certain amount of time after the issue of a model run then stop once what they have is sold out. I don't think it is reasonable to expect them to keep manufacturing parts to eternity. An 84, you are looking at a 29 year old bike.

With cars for older parts, most of the parts are after market and you find them at automotive joints who specialize in restorations or hot rods and the such. You should also consider, there is a greater market for older automotive parts than there may be for bikes due to the vastly higher numbers out there.

Have you tried Craigslist and the such? They may be a source for what you are looking for. Check the classifieds on this forum and others. Several people have older bikes they are parting out.

    Good luck.

Who said I was not having fun. Just sharing my thoughts on Honda not supplying parts for older bikes. I bought an older bike and am happy I did as I plan on keeping it as an antique, and buying a newer one next spring.
I enjoy fixing things, and locating parts is part of the challenge and fun of it.

Federal law requires manufactures to supply parts for 10 years. After that you're on your own. Any parts available after that is up to the manufacturer. The problem I have is every time I buy a cheap bike for parts I end up wanting to restore the stupid thing. Argggg...

If you think Honda is bad (it's not, I can still buy a fully-painted fairing set for my '96), you shouldn't check out Yamaha. They put their parts into obsolescence on year 10, day 1.

I bet they clear out their inventory to some place that is in the business of supplying parts for older bikes. This way they optimize space at their own plants and warehouses. I also bet Yamaha is not the only big business that does this. That option would make a lot of sense to me if I were a business man. In big business, a lot of it anyways, optimum use of real-estate is a concern that a lot of brain power is spent on.

The CB 750/1100 1979/1982 boys are working slowly around this problem by having various members around the world making particular parts that you can no longer get from Honda or they work out something from another model or make that can be adapted to suit. Probably wouldn't work here because even though they are VFR's they vary greatly

Does anyone know if other interceptor models mufflers are compatible with the 83 VF750 collector? I want to bring my exhaust back to stock and I am having a hell of a time finding a decent set.

You can still get all the critical parts for the 2000 but I will tell you that the fuel pump is discontinued (don't ask me how I know) but the '02-'09 VFR fuel pump is compatible.

Yamaha is not as bad as Honda. Kawasaki is not as bad as Honda.

Just so you all know, I like Honda, they make great bikes. I miss my VFR still but in owning a Yamaha race bike and restoring a mid 80's Kawasaki motorcycle mixed with owning a couple Hondas and keeping them running. Honda ALWAYS drops there support even if the bike is popular and has mass appeal.

I can attest that Yamaha and Kawasaki carry on parts past the 10 year mark if the bikes were popular OR they use the same part in 10 different machines so 20 years later they still make them.

They all do business similar, buut nobody pulls the plug like Honda.

So to the OP, as suggested scam on ebay and ask the locals here for 1000 parts.

I can get almost every single part for my 73 CB750 from Honda brand new in the bag right down to washers, nuts and bolts. They don't abandon all their models.
