Welcome to the site. I lived over there for11 years prior to 89. Love the Island but my employer of the day told me my next paycheck will be in Chilliwack. Where on the Island? Please tell me it is not Nanaimo! Lived, well actually existed, there from 78 to 80 before moving on to Campbell River, the greatest town around.

Not nanaimo, but close. I'm in ladysmith. Only been here for a couple months. Before that I was in campbell river for a couple years. Also have lived in lake cowichan and mill bay/shawnigan. Originally from Ontario and have lived all over the country...but I couldn't imagine leaving the island now.

Welcome to the WORLD from yet another British Columbian there JV. My wife's parents live in Errington just outside Parksville. If we get a chance to get out that way next season with the bikes we may just have to look you up and you could show us some roads that my wife may have forgotten existed. LOL. Of course if the cost of the ferry keeps going up we might never get back to the island and alas, you may never get off the island.

Hope you enjoy the bike and don't forget to keep her shiny side up.

Welcome aboard. What are these collectors plates you mentioned, do you not have to pay licence fees on a vehicle when it reaches a certain age?

To get collector plates, your vehicle must be 20 or 25 years old and be in pretty good shape. And stock. Any mods and you do not qualify. With this, your insurance rates are just a fraction of what you would normally pay. I don't think your age has anything to do with this. On a car or truck, you would not be able to drive to and from school or work so basically pleasure use only. On motorcycles here, they do not differentiate between pleasure use and to and from work.

yeah, what 34668Randy said. only restriction is not allowed to use the bike for work. and the savings are huge, for example my first insurance quote was $1200/year....BUT with the collectors plate its only $200/year. which is why i'll never have a new bike again!

    Welcome to the Nut Hut...

Good to have you and a pristine looking VFR on board.. I think we are heading your way in Jan. via the cage. Going to grab a couple WHL games in Vic. then ferry across and watch a game in Vanc.

HOLY Hell $1200/yr for a bike??? That is absolutely mind boggling.. I don't pay that for 2 cages and my bike..

Welcome to Canada! Still though, even $1200/year is not the worst you can do. The poor guys in Quebec pay that just to REGISTER their bike every year...then have to pay for insurance on top of that!
So, yeah, getting my collector plate is a must to save some serious cash.

Along with our 12 month riding season, we also have no compulsory insurance in SA! A portion of our fuel price goes to the Road Accident Fund which some crooked politician usually cleans out every couple of years.

While we don't all have a 12 month riding season here in Canada with the exception maybe of Canada's WEsT coast (the Vancouver area) where it can rain more than it snows during the winter, at least the politicians are the same everywhere. LOL.

Do you have any idea exactly how old the bike must be to qualify for collectors plates? 20 or 25 years? My wife's new-to-her 96 VFR would be eligible for collector plates in 2016 if it is 20 years.

Sorry, it's 25 years for the special plates. Only exception for newer vehicles is if they are VERY rare, in which case it only has to be 15 years old. So, if you can convince icbc that's a 96' honda is very rare, you're all set!

Well at the risk of sounding sexist, the bike is 18 years old, it is a VFR, AND it is owned by and being ridden by a female. That has to count for something RIGHT? She also spent about 8 hours cleaning the swing arm with a toothbrush. NOW that should definitely be considered rare methinks.
