    Hello All,
I am starting a cross country trip on an 86 VFR 750 in 2 weeks, I would like to get some feedback from anyone who has fitted a power output to charge their smart phone, I am not an electrical engineer and would appreciate your input, I have been warned that simply buying a waterproof socket and wiring it in at 12V could be a problem.

I appreciate your responses and support.

Can you elaborate on what exactly you were warned about regarding using a waterproof socket? I've installed them on my last 4 bikes and never had any issue with any of them. Just use the proper gauge wiring and add an inline fuse and you should be fine. As mentioned above you can wire into a switched power source or run straight to the battery and add your own switch if you want.
