Hello all, had some spare time this weekend to think over a project that I've wanted to embark on for a long time, a VF1000R. After countless hours of internet search engines and web sites I've found a few bikes that I would consider worthy. Unfortunately none of these bikes are even near me, most are a full days drive or possibly more.

I was surprised to find how rare even the mid 80's vfr500 and 750's were to find. Once again not a one local. Its looking like this project is going to be a challenge just to get started let alone working through sourcing parts and working the bugs out of a vintage machine.

With winter closing in I will be making the same searches for a bike, but riding one home just won't be an option until spring. However, this has always been on the bucket list.

What I'm getting at here is that all of you that own mid 80's VFR's are sure lucky. There's not many of them out there. I'm sure some of you all ready know that. Those with more than one and a parts bike to boot.....well u are truly blessed as well.

Keep this in mind when you get that urge to sell, these bikes are definately keepers. I dug out some old pictures of my 84 500 Interceptor, I wish I still had that bike.

Take care everyone, someday I might be able to hang with you guys when I get my hands on a VF1000R, it just might be spring however. Ha!

Hey there Reista, somewhat local to Erie Pennsylvania. I've been using Cycle Trader and of course Ebay. I was referred to Search Tempest as well which I've tried out. Any other suggestions?

1985 Honda VF1000R I would grab that one if it's still for sale. Yes it's in Ohio, but that's not too far!

As far as getting it home, rent a trailer and tie downs. might cost $40-60 but it's worth it if you can't ride

Originally I was a little cautious, somethings off with that tank. I hate to be picky but I can't imagine what decent tank might cost for one of these. This tank does not even have the same shape as the original.

Don't be THAT picky. If the tank has been replaced, it's a much easier deal to find than a whole bike =p The tank appears to be off of a different generation.
    1984 Honda VF1000 F Interceptor VF 1000 s R H744 Gas Fuel Petrol Tank Nice | eBay
Honda VF1000F Interceptor Tank Benzintank | eBay

In short, DO NOT let the tank stop you from the purchase if that's the issue =p it can easily be replaced

I would say the MOST you would pay for a really good tank with factory paint in great condition would be $350 TOPS. Most prices will be around $150-$200

Guess I was lucky to find 3 R's from the same seller. $1500 for all 3 and a ton of spares. The '86 runs excellent.

You were very lucky Hoptit88, I stumbled upon your video late last night. That was truly a great find, especially within a couple hour drive. Score!!!!.......

Reista, I received an email from the seller I contacted. The big VF has seen better days. The bodywork is all there however the upper and lower are pretty well shagged out. There's another bike in the Boston area that I'm waiting to get more info on. I don't think I'm being to picky when it comes to this bike. I don't want to bite on the first one I see just because its closer. If I can find one that is in better condition a little farther away I would much rather go that route.

I only said picky because the ad said it runs perfectly, and there are minor cosmetic stuffs (which are an easy fix most of the time) I agree on not biting on the first one, don't get me wrong XD If it turns up the ad runs short on its claims, i would change my vision of the bike accordingly, or ask the guy to come down to accommodate replacing the tank/other cosmetic work

That tank is from a Rothman's edition. It's the exact same tank that's on every year R. Since the body work needs a patch and respray, you'd be painting the tank anyway.

The odds of finding an R that doesn't have body issues is rare. The area around the mirror mounts develops cracks as does the top of the seat cowl. It's common to see tabs missing on the tail light surround and the mesh side covers.

If it's "perfect" and very low mile, expect to pay $5500+

Good points guys, I appreciate your input. I just have it stuck in my head that for the best end result I need to start with the best possible specimen.

OMG, but those 1kR's are HEAVY !! Yes, i've ridden two. Instead of hauling around that much weight all the time, why not consider a gen 2 '86/'87 VFR, lighter, easier to get parts, much easier to work on ??

Perhaps someone needs to spend more time in the gym and less time trying to tell people what bike they're supposed to want. Just a thought.

I have considered the first generation VFR, however the seem to be just as hard to find. I do like them a lot. I can't imagine the weight being anymore noticeable than my Hurricane 1000.

I'm game for a 4th or 5th generation VFR as well, not too many in my area. But anything other than a Harley around here is considered off the wall. The VFR's would make a great sport touring ride which I'm looking for. The big and heavy 1000R has always been on the wanted list in my book ever since picking up my used 84 500F in 87.

I think its finally time for that bike, I'm not getting any younger.

I just found a 84 VF750 10 minutes from. I was not even looking for one. But the price was right so I bought it. It is a very nice bike. But I went looking on the net after and here in western Canada there only a very few for sale. Many more in Ontario, but way to far to drive for a bike.
I would now like to find a 500. Anyway just joined the forum yesterday and really enjoying it.
