I own a 1998 VFR-800 and would appreciate it if you guys could give me your opinion on tank bags. I need something large enough to hols a small jacket, gps and some other small item.

    Thanks in advance.

I have an old Tank Bag that I bought used.

    it's magnetic...and isn't any known brand.

I love it and have used it on my old '86 VF500, '86 VFR750, and my current '97 VFR750

It's not very large but can squeeze a fullsize rain suit and has a clear map pocket ontop

Bags-Connection. They use a ring that mounts on the gas "cap" area so the bag doesn't actually touch the tank. Although the black color fades very quickly in the sun, the bag itself lasts almost forever :)

Chase Harper makes a great product with a life time unconditional warranty, the 1150mm is what I have used for years. They give half off on any trade in at Moto GP so I trade up to a new one every year. Here is a link.Chase Harper TankBags

Just realized it is the bag in my avatar pic, stuffed enough crap into it on that trip to go two weeks and only did laundry twice.

I have another Tank bag that I don't use as it is too Tall.

One of the things I love about my tank bag is the way it sits, sloped, on my tank....allowing me to rest my upper body on it on long trips.

I have a 15 yr old RKA tank bag. It still looks damned near good as new. Expandable and a top quality product. Richard and Kathy take GREAT care of their customers. I am so happy with my RKA soft stuff, I will never consider another brand.

So far we have an equal number of answer posts and an equal number of opinions. This could change.

Got an old Rex Marsee that has been on four bikes so far and still holding. It even gets me through one of those "Shop till ya drop" episodes at Walmart.

I have a tourmaster i bought in 97' still in great shape. If i were buying a new one though i would probably get an expandable bag. Very handy when you come back with more crap than you brought. I use to have the 1150? But someone liked it more than me and stole it off the bike. I carry my bag anytime im going to be out of site and have managed to keep this one for 16 years.

My red RKA tank bag is at least 10 years old and still going strong. Excellent magnetic type.

I use a Joe Rocket Manta XL and am very happy with it. It has a round pocket that looks like it was designed for a disc player but I only keep the paperwork for the bike in it. The main zipper is sort of curved so it is quite easy to get into. I use the phone pouch to hold change for road tolls. It tapers down toward the seat so if you tuck in your chest can come up to it quite smoothly. The magnets hold it on very well. I had some clear screen savers for a handheld computer that I put where the magnets res on the tank to keep the paint nice. I can just fit a shield for my helmet too but just is the operative word. Six years old and still nothing has failed. Good luck.

I bought a Givi bag with the Tanklock setup, primarily because of the price and the size. Didn't want anything too big, just enough to use for commuting to and from work. I like the fact that it doesn't touch the tank at all, and the attach/release is easy, even with gloves on.

I know this is kind of off subject but does anyone know how to bring back the black in a sun faded tank bag. I have had mine since 97 and there is nothing wrong with but the fading in places. Have tried a few things and it may last for few days but always comes back faded. Sorry for the hijack but couldnt think of a better place to ask. Thanks

You have the seasoned veteran look. Even in south Florida, it takes years to fade them to grey. I like them like that, but my wimmins I prefer China white, because the FL sun will burn yah another arse hole and I dont want to be with a prune face. I got all Chase Harper stuff btw. Real Life Time Guarantee, made in America, nice company, nice stuff...

Sorry to bump an old thread, but does anyone know if the Givi gas cap ring for the 6th-gen will fit a 5th-gen as well?

Matching the part numbers should indicate the fit.

On tank bags, I used nylon of a couple of brands efore going with a Speedpak hard top. Waterproof, rainproof, and has an access hole for electronics.
Magnetic mount, jsut be careful and no debris under the tank.

I also have a Axio tank bag in black I bought used but very nice and never used. Black hard case with magntic mounts. Supposed to fit a laptop. Seems nice, but I have nto tried it yet.

    YMMV.

Cortech Super 2.0 18-Liter Magnetic Tank Bag - RevZilla

I have the magnetic version of the cortech 18 liter bag - and am very happy with it. The fit is almost perfect on my 6th gen - and it does not move at all. In the past, I had a chase harper bag - and the big difference is that this cortech bag has stiff sides, so it holds its shape regardless of whether it is packed full, or is mostly empty. Also, the features on it are great. It is very nicely designed and constructed.
