Had my 2002 VFR now for two months and 4K miles. It now has 12k on it. Noticed that it has not needed chain adjustment? Lube and clean ...yes adjustment no. Anyone want to comment ...

Good quality "O"ring chains don't need adjustment often, keep it lubed and you can get good miles out of them

I have the same year with the same mileage. I did an adjustment recently just to be safe but it probably didn't need it.

When you have to adjust an O-ring chain frequently is when it needs replacing.

I had a similar experience recently. Went on a 2k mile road trip, got home, cleaned and lubed the chain, checked the tension annnnnnd...perfect. Waited a few days since I'd just re-lubed it (rides around town), checked the tension annnnnnd perfect. I honestly don't think I've adjusted this chain in 4k miles (probably checked it a half dozen times though).

I check the slack everytime I clean and lube my chain. I do adjust more often when the end of the chain life. I would start worry when it hit 15k

So long as you check the chain regularly for wear, lube and proper tension. Like states many places many times, treat your chain and sprockets with proper care and you will enjoy long life out of a reasonable quality chain.

2002 bike and 4k miles is your mark. The age and condition of the chain when the bike was purchased is not known. My advice? Check your chain slack though 360 degrees. Kinda like those BMW splines that ya never know about until ya look.

What do you guys consider a long life? Scrubalong mentioned 15,000 miles but to me that seems a little low. Mine has 10,500 on it now and I adjusted it a couple weeks ago. I will admit one thing I don't like about the VFR is the lack of shaft drive. My Kawasaki KFX 700 is shaft drive and when I go to the sand dunes and ride with Yamaha Raptor guys all they get done is stopping to check and adjust their chains. I realize you give up a little power with shaft drive but its so much nicer not having to mess with it not to mention there is no greasy chain to make a mess of everything.

Mileages can be vary, it is depend on how you ride and maintenance them. It will last to 20K if well care for. Like many suggestion above check the slack of the chain all around for any kink or tight spot. Adjust them accordingly at the tightest spot.

If you took a shaft drive 1200 VFR to the dunes , which tires would you recommend?

IMO 20,000 miles is a great life for a chain lubed with spray can chain lube. With something like the Scott Oiler, 20,000 miles is normal, and probably another 5-7000 miles.

I have nearly 50,000ks on the sprockets and chain on my CB750F and it is still fine. That was mostly freeway commuting and just staying with the traffic, not flogging it. Adjusted it once

Klicks in Oz are very small. This compensates for the largeness of Saltwater Crocks and crocks of other types.

Ok then, I have put 7,000 miles on an "Ö"ring chain on my Enfield Interceptor and I would never expect to have to change that chain again, at least not in my lifetime. Lucky for us southerners, salties are up north but since they became protected about 30 years ago some of them have grown into monsters

Yes indeed! Those old Royal Enfield twins slung enough oil to keep any chain lubed enough to last a lifetime.

Hopefully those Salties are not migrating. I hear they really like surfers.

I got mine with about 50k km in April 2013 , the chain looked like it needed replacing. After a clean up, it looked new & the sprocket is still good. I adjusted the chain very slightly although i'm sure it didn't need to. So now I'm only lubing it...

I've adjusted once in the last 20k miles and it was about 1k miles ago.

One thing is for sure. When the chain is dragging the ground and throwing sparks in one of those Moto GP starts that are in, it's time for a little wrenching.
