Got things back together and then noticed the instructions in the FSM. They say to stick your finger in the carb throat and hold the slide up when putting the spring and cover on.

I took one back apart and the diaphragm was seated fine- not pinched.

For the life of me I don't understand what they're trying to say.
How do you guys do it?

a fing-ee. The carb top should kind of float. Then you know you bulls-eyed the fit between the gasket and top of the carb assembly. Its a feel thing, kind of trying to explain the feeling of an orgasm to an alien...

Explain to an alien? I'd rather demonstrate.

Well, one of us is showing their age.
That's an Orion slave girl from the original Star Trek.
