WELL I FINALLY DID IT, AFTER 11000 MILES ON MY 2002 RED VFR 800 I DROPPED IT ON THE CLUTCH SIDE IN A PARKING LOT. NOT MUCH DAMAGE BUT I WANTED TO SEE IF ANYONE HAD ANY IDEAS ON THE BEST WAY TO REPAIR/REPLACE THE FOLLOWING.

    1. BENT CLUTCH LEVER (ITS STILL FUNCTIONAL BUT IS OUT OF SHAPE). I'VE LOOKED FOR REPLACEMENTS ONLINE. THEY SEEM TO BE PRETTY CHEAP, BUT I COULDN'T FIND ANY FOR MY BIKE, JUST A BUNCH FOR CBRS.

    2. (2) 4 INCH LONG BLACK SCRATCHES ON THE LOWER CLUTCH SIDE FAIRING. I REALLY DON'T FEEL LIKE SPENDING $300-$400 TO PAINT THE ENTIRE PIECE WHEN ONLY 2 4 INCH LONG BLACK SCRAPES NEED FIXED. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF DECALS OR TOUCH UP ITEMS I COULD USE TO COVER/REPAIR THIS?

    3. SO I CAN PREVENT THIS IN THE FUTURE, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN BUY FRAME SLIDERS TO FIT MY 2002 VFR? AGAIN, ALL I COULD FIND FOR HONDAS WERE FOR CBRS?

    ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRICIATED.

    H,
I think I'm also going to install the sliders after hearing about your bike...
Try this link its for a 1998 but there is a link to a company that can help.

Man, I just did the same thing! >:(

I've had my bike for 2 1/2 years now and I drop the thing because I forgot to put the kickstand down! :-/ Doh! Oh well.

Like you said, little damage. The clutch lever is bent but still usable, light scratches on left side blinker and light scratches on lower left fairing. Most scratches are just on the decal though so it's not that bad.

Those frame sliders come from the UK and by the time you pay shipping and everything, they cost around $325 depending on conversion rates at the time! I've been looking at buying them for 2 years now but have been hesitant because of the cost. Wish I would have put them on now.

When I first bought my '02 VFR, I dropped it in a parking lot about a week later. I broke a mirror, scratched up the right lower fairings and bar ends. As for parts, you can get all the OEM parts from Arizona Motorsports at a decent price. Here's the link:
    http://store.azmusa.com/honvfrspec.html

Also, you can get touch up paint from any Walmart, Kmart or similar store. You probably won't find an exact match, but no one notices my touch up work unless I point it out. From 3 to 5 feet away I don't notice the touch up work either.

dsm36, Have you used Arizona motorsports before? I'm about to drop a load of cash for some body parts and any feedback would help.

What do you guys think of the look of frame sliders? I don't really mind them on an obviously track-oriented bike, but on a VFR? I really want the protection but I'm worried the sliders are almost as ugly as a scratch.

Holy back from the grave thread batman!!

OK you are new and that is indeed a fair question Alex...

All I can say is I have frame sliders and matching bar ends on my VFR which I have tested  - and they do what they are designed to do, and worth every penny. I have never thought twice about the aesthetics, just think how unhappy you would be with what your VFR would look like if you hit some diesel and take a spill!

The 6th gen is a heavy bike so cheapo crash mushrooms bolted to the fairing won't help and may make things worse by ripping chunks out of the fairing if it tips over, hence its only worth fitting proper frame sliders which bolt right through the frame. OK they entail cutting holes in the fairing and fitting a redesigned coolant tank - that's why they are not cheap.

One final tip is to make sure the pivot bolts on your wing mirrors are not too tight. Ok they need to be tight enough to keep the mirror in place, but if the bike tips over you want the mirrors to simply pivot back rather than snap off.

Hope that helps - It looks like you have worked out how to use the forum search feature:cool:!

It sounds like you know what you're talking about-- I assume you have sliders installed on your bike. Did you do them yourself or have the dealer mount them? I've seen some people talking about no-cut sliders-- apparently they are riskier in a race/real crash but offer the major advantage that you don't have to cut into the fairing. Anyone know a good brand of those??

As I said I have got sliders on my 6th gen and I know they will protect the bike from a tip over or slow lowside. Apart from some slight scuff marks on the sliders you would not be aware the bike had been dropped as the fairing, pegs and engine were not affected. The ones I have are from the UK firm R&G Racing, and I fitted them in the garage with basic tools on one wet afternoon. I think no-cut sliders are available for some lighter bikes but I have never seen anyone offering them for heavier bikes like the VFR800/1200 models.

I would stay away from no cut sliders. Either get ones like described by skimad4x4 or don't do it at all. Not cut sliders can do more damage than a tip over would without them.

    Thanks!
I picked that up last spring from a fella in Erie PA. Then I sold it to Michael here in Ottawa. It was a nice example of a stock 2002 but it was lowered and had the sliders. I moved on to the 2007 I have now.

LighTech makes a set of no-cut frame sliders for the VFR800 that bolt securely into the engine case Alex.

I swapped out the mild steel mount bolts that came with the LighTech frame sliders and replaced them with a pair of Titanium bolts from Racebolts that you see in this pic.
The slider pucks on these particular frame sliders are made out of non-sparking Magnesium.

The forward frame sliders that you see on my bike are the R&G's with custom machined Orange slider pucks that I got from Jaybee Biker Bits that are 5mm longer than the stock slider pucks that originally came with the R&G's.

The rearward frame sliders that you see are the LighTech's.

Talk about a resurrection of an old thread. This one from 2004. And the OP has only posted the one time!

Well at least one of us is paying attention! Stevo is probably looooong gone...especially since he only ever posted here once. Oh well, it appears that we all had something to offer and we got some more amazing images of Stosh's beasty.
