Hi VFR World, i have a vfr 750 R supersport. The starter motor which is positioned at the front of the bike under the exhaust pipes has me puzzled. I removed the starter motor some time ago, and i am now restoring the bike and i cannot locate the where the earth connection. I cannot find where to earth the starter motor? Where do i earth it or how should i earth it? Any suggestions.Should there be another wire there. P.s I was told that as the starter motor is so powerful that you must provide some mechanical resistance when testing the starter motor when it is disconnected from the clutch box. I bought a new one and wanted to test it, can i just hook it up to the battery or electric coil and test it. Thank you for taking the time to read about my problem
I've never worked on a 750 but most bikes get the earth ground connection thru the frame of the starter motor when you bolt it to the engine. If you bench test one then best to put it in a vice or wood clamp it down. You can hold it but it's pretty scary the first few times. To energize the starter on the bench I use jumper cables and clamp the black negative clamp to the frame of the starter and then touch the red positive clamp to the post on the starter
As per Sleepy, the starter's case is the ground point. It's BS that you need special methods to test starter just to see if it runs; simply hook up the 2 leads briefly, and be prepared for the starter to jump around a bit in reaction to its torque.
