My 85 vf500f is pissin out oil fro an oil seal around the clutch pushrod. Looks like engine has to be completely tore down to replace it. Is that how it's chNged or can I pull it out and cram in the new one. 3 dollar seal and looks to be a big headache. Please help if possible before I do the painstaking labour of re and re whole engine

    Hmm

Not my idea, but Yahoo suggests you are not the first to encounter this problem - and one post on their forum came up with a possible alternative solution, which just might work for you, and avoid having to pull the motor.

<<So I have a leaky oil seal around the clutch pushrod. I have a new one, but can't seem to get the old one out. Any suggestions?>>

<<Yes. It's a common thing. I have the same thing, but I seem to have solved in on my 85 VF500F by removing the pushrod, and sliding some heat shrink tubing over the rod where it will slide thru the seal. Shrink it with a lighter to make it tight. You only want the tubing long enough to stay inside the seal all the time. This is important! If it's too short, when you pull the clutch it will slide OUT of the seal hole and will not go back in. Make it long enough to stay inside the seal when compressed and extended. Basically all you're doing is slightly increasing the diameter of the rod where it slides thru the seal, and often this is all it needs to compress the rubber in the seal enough to stop the leak.

I bought a new seal myself, and then found out you had to split the caes in order to do this job correctly.>>

There is a O-ring on the end of the water pump, maybe that O-ring needs to be replaced? It's near that area that you are referring to.

You should check the pushrod for wear, this could be why the seal is damaged. V4 market place
has what looks like a small pce of foil that wraps around the pushrod and is heated in the oven
and hardens over the rod to make it smoother, so it does not ruin the seal. I have not tried it
so don't know if it will work.
