I would like to use my new Sargent saddle with the solo seat cowl on my 5th gen. How do I secure the solo seat without using the pillion seat? There's no locking part.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find any info from doing a search.

Use the "frankenbolts" to secure it.

    Said "frankenbolt"

Disclaimer. I did not take my luggage racks all of the way off. I just took my tailbag off, and two of the bolts so I could show you how it mates up.

You should be able to get an idea from this sideview.

You do not technically need the "frankenbolts"...I mean you can rig something up with a similarly threaded bolt, washers, spacer, etc....however, stock, the frankenbolts are what papa Honda intended.

Sargent used to make a "quick release" pin setup if you tire of unthreading your frankenbolts. One caveat though, you have to drill out the threads in the mounts , and it would be easier to steal what is under there. Your call boss.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the reply Derstuka, but I was wondering more about what keeps the rider's portion of the two-part saddle on the bike when you don't use the pillion seat. The rider section just slides on with no lock. If you use the cowl does it secure the front saddle section simply by jamming it against the plastic? Or is there some other seat locking method not mentioned in the Sargent instructions?

Saddle just has 2 plastic hooks that slide on in a forward direction.

Nothing stopping the saddle from sliding backwards with pillion seat removed.

Yes, as silly as it sounds, "jamming it against the plastic cowl."

Well, I'll put it this way, I know several guys who have been riding like this for probably 4 years now, and they have never had a issue with the seat sliding off, or complained of movement. If you decide to get freaky with the old lady in your saddle with the cowl on...well, then it may be insufficient. :xxx::ass: If you move around like a tweeker with piles sitting on the concrete floor in the sheriff's station, then if may also be insufficient.

I would put it on and not worry about it. Most that would happen IF something did would be a little bit of movement, as the seat has to lift up to come off the hooks, and the seat cowl being bolted down prevents it from being able to lift up enough to dislodge it.

I am not a cowl man, so I do not bother with it. I have ridden with it on and it did not move. Like I am saying, regular (read no violent) movement is gonna be fine.

    Cheers,

I ride with a Sargent and Cowl and never secure the seat. I just ride it with the cowl in place and it stays put. If it bothers you cut a stick to length and jam it behind the seat to keep it from sliding back and hide it with the cowl.

I was afraid of the seat sliding as well.
    Never has.

High speed, maneuvering, jackrabbit starts...stays put.

I always run with just the front part and the cowl. Lots of space under there.
