I have a recently acquired VFR800, it has 31k miles on it, only of which about 250 i have put on. I went in today to remove the pair system, and got the airbox off, and there are chunks of dirt on and around the throttle body. Filter is a K&N. I will clean and oil the filter of course, but how should I clean this mess up? There is also a bit of fluid (oil?) around the air stacks, not sure if thats a big deal, its not much just a thin layer here and there.

What I am concerned about is the dirt that would have made its way though, how does all that get cleaned out so I have a clean engine?

Connection to airbox might not be tight enuff or filter not fitting properly ?

Get some clean towel cover the intake and use vacum to suck all the dirt out. Use some cleaner if need it.

So i used carb cleaner and just wiped around the openings of the throttle body. I can use a vacuum to suck from around the throttle body, but what about my engine, do you think its ok, or is this bad news.....not sure what I can do.

Update. The previous owner has this K&N installed. I removed it, cleaned it, and I am waiting for it to dry to re-install.

I noticed that the stock airbox has gaskets on both the cover and the airbox. K&N instructions say these should be removed for proper fitting of the K&N filter. So the previous owner did not remove them. Should I remove both gaskets or just one? I removed the one on the bottom of the airbox, but it looks like the cover has a gasket too........no doubt this was causing improper fit (it looked weird, like the cover couldn't close properly and make a good seal), and so no doubt this is part of the fault of all my dirt in my throttle body. Please advise on these gaskets

Can I/should I clean any of the sensors connected to the airbox, like the MAP sensor? Would I use MAF cleaner? I figured since I saw some oil near the throttle body openings, it was probably from the K&N, and maybe some of it made it into the MAP sensor and perhaps I should clean it?

less is more sometimes, re-install the K&N and ride it! You could get an appropriate cleaner for those sensors as CRC sells all sorts of stuff, I would hold off on that. I still like carburetors though, that dont help you though...

Good Luck, Keep us posted hugh

Yeah as was said...remove BOTH gaskets and install the K&N. You are not getting a proper seal otherwise.....

Studies have shown that there are more than 400 tons of suspended dirt and other contaminants in a cubic mile of air over a typical big city..........It is also widely accepted by reputable mechanical engineers and engine builders that dirt and grit approximately 20 to 25 microns in size can cause severe engine wear if they get past the air filter. For comparison, a human hair is typically 50 to 100 microns wide.

I'm not saying your engine is trashed, but it certainly hasn't been treated very well. If you are really concerned, perform a leak down test. The leak down test will actually inform you as to where you are losing cylinder pressure. A compression test will only tell you how much a piston compresses the gases in the cylinder......It's up to you to determine if you really want to know or not.

I would also recommend doing some research on air filters to determine if you really want to put that K&N back in the airbox.

Don't quite understand how a preference for carbs over throttle bodies has anything to do with filtering the air that enters your engine, but hey, this is the interwebz and I don't understand Turretts Syndrome either......

You could always put the stock filter back in and not have to worry aboot it again. I would consider that normal for a K&N filter in bad conditions.

I did read later, in the service manual, that I shouldn't have used carb cleaner on the throttle body, because its coated in molybdenum......
