Not a lot of news from here lately. Bled the brakes, gonna need new lines, but not immediately. Still have to do the clutch. Oil is in and now I'm waiting on the battery I ordered, have to pick it up tomorrow. Hopefully turn the key on this weekend and see if things work. I have to say I'm getting a bit nervous. Will hopefully have a good news report soon.

Hello everyone. Tried to start the bike today, fuel pump primed, pumping 30 oz/minute as needed, engine cranking just fine, but I have no spark. Pulse gen's at 480-490 ohms, coils at 2.7 ohms primary and 15k ohms secondary at coils. I am however dropping down to 6-7 volts at the brand new battery when cranking. Also, there seems to be discrepancy in the shop manual, as to which spark unit powers which coil, a diagram shows one way and wiring schematic suggests another. I don't think this would be related to my no-spark issue, it wouldn't run that way but would still spark, just at the wrong time for each bank. Checking grounds, hoping it may be that simple. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

White connector = cyl 1/3, red connector = 2/4 for ignition boxes.

IT IS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! After a few hairy moments today, the bike fired , adjusted the idle and idles nicely at about 1100 rpm for now. I am a very happy man today. I still have to sync the carbs, have a few small light gremlins hanging around. A question, do the turn signals function as running lights? I have one staying on as a running light, they all flash as they should though. No huge deal to figure out, I just thought I'd ask here. Some of the issues, I am trying to cope with from memory, and quite honestly, it must not be very good. But what a GREAT day this is.
Grey, vfrcapn, Jamie and everyone else that has helped me to get to this point, I can't thank you enough for the help you have all given me. The knowledge you guys have is irreplaceable, there is no way I could have gotten to this point without you guys.
Now to get my elec figured out and hope the tranny shifts as it should, and I'm going to get through these break-in miles quick.
    Thanks again everyone!

Sorry about a couple of simple questions yesterday, was just thinking outloud here. The turn signals have been replaced, simply a burnt element, front and rear brake switches cleaned and adjusted also. I want to clean the petcock and fuel tank tube one more time just for peace of mind, and put a few miles on, to see how close carbs are to start with.
I do have what I think is a good question though. I have a little bit of play between the left front brake caliper and the anti dive piston, is this normal? Seems that it would lead to some brake chatter. I am not having much luck finding info on this.

Normal. Glad you have it running. Now take it out and see how it works. You'll love the power band.

Well, I didn't get to have it out for long. Riding around the neighborhood and it died on me, lucky I only had to push about 100 feet and coast the rest of the way. Checked a few things out, bowls all had good fuel in them but, 2 and 4 were a little lean, 1 was worse, 3 was white, so I'm glad it shut down when it did. SOOOOOOO... I'm doing what I should have done a couple of months ago and sending the carbs off for a good, no great cleaning. Will give me some time to fab some framework for my solo cowl, and do some needed work on the cafe. Hope to have it back together for our local metricfest next month.

Jamie, yes, Billy Carr. I sure hope that this will cure my lean issue, or at least get me to where I'm only tinkering with jets. This does make me feel as though I owe you an apology before we even talk it over, but this was some of the money I had set aside for a shock if all was well. All in due time though. Thanks for your input Jamie.

Got my carbs back from Billy Carr, and they look.......AWESOME!!!!! I went through the tank and pump, installed new lines, just to make sure they are as clean as can be. Although I believe I have a bad fuel pump relay. Pumps fine when I jumper it to fill the bowls, but I never hear the pump come on other than that. I get about 6 blocks (progressively getting weaker) and then it quits. So, I'll get a new relay and hopefully keep moving forward.

vf1000 first ride day 8-13-13 019.jpg vf1000 first ride day 8-13-13 021.jpg vf1000 first ride day 8-13-13 017.jpg Took the bike out for a ride today and it ran really well. Only went about 6 miles but it pulled very strong up to the 9500 rpm that I took it to. Have a few minor issues to tend to, not withstanding a shock and some front end tinkering. We have an AMOB metricfest bike show and swap at one of the dealerships here on sat, so I guess I can take it and my little cb350 this year, along with my dads 400 kawi. Should be a great time!
Again, I want to thank all of you guys for helping me this this bike in boxes to the stage it is now, in 9 months. It's been a lot of work, but it gets more worth the effort everyday.
Heck, I already have a guy at work offering to buy it, unseen. I wasn't aware that it was for sale yet, I told him.
Time to start riding this a little anyway.
THANK YOU GUYS SOOOOOOO MUCH FOR ALL THE HELP.
    Looking forward to more

Cleaned up and ready for the weekend. Heres my mini stable. Will have to do for awhile, til I can find another 86 gsxr, and maybe an 851 duc. At some point in time those 2 will seal the deal. the stable 8-16-13 001.jpg the stable 8-16-13 006.jpg the stable 8-16-13 007.jpg

Thanks guys, not to the level of either of you 2, but it's looking good nonetheless, not done yet, need to work on suspension and brakes. Does anyone know if the 750 and 1000 brake lines are the same length? I am having a hard time finding 1000 brake lines on any of the sites, but I do see them for the 750. Would like a 2 line front setup.
A tip to anyone buying a basketcase. Use the knowledge these guys have on this site! Capn, Jamie, Hopit, Grey,Billy, and others. You guys have been a lot of help, and great inspiration with your projects and abilities.

You might want to make sure you aren't finding brake lines for a VFR750 - that is a totally different motorcycle. That said, the same lines work on any VF700/750/1000. Good luck!

Any opinions on HEL brake lines? Would 1000R lines work?

My guess would be the R lines will be too short. The bars are much lower on the R, probably around a 2" difference. I tried putting F bars on my R once but gave up when I realized the throttle cables weren't even close. Didn't get a chance to try the brake/clutch lines.

I'd measure the stock lines and call up some shops with the length you need. I have HEL on my R, no complaints in the couple years they've been on.

Your brake line from the MC to the splitter could be different than the others. The two lines from the splitter to the calipers should be the same. Go with braided lines for better braking. They make a good improvement.
