I just purchased a very clean and well maintained 1996 Honda VFR 750f, I am new to VFR's. The bike has 19,xxx miles on it. I was riding it a few days past and the speedo went dead, about a minute later when teh RPM's dropped the bike died. After about 15 minutes of sitting the battery would click but the bike would not turn over. I purchased and charged up a new battery and wallah the bike ran great for two days, out for a cruise today and 30 minutes in, the speedo went dead.

About a minute later I got nothing.

Where do I start my trouble shooting? A lot of Voltage regulator/rectifier talk on line do I just throw a new one in and see if that clears up the dead battery scenario? Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

Start by reading the RR talk you mentioned and check the voltage at 4000rpm. Less than 14v and replace the RR.

Although it is usually the RR, you should still check the stator output and the wiring for the charging system before ordering it. There is a chance the RR may still be good, or you may end up damaging the new one, if there are still other problems. Plus you may have to order more than the RR.

Thank you, I ran the volts and no matter what the idle is the volts are at 12.

Like karazy said, if you want to be sure, ohm out the three yellow stator wires.

I've had the exact same thing happen on my 95. The local Honda guru said to start with the stator but to also consider putting on the VFRness as the OEM wiring is a little light duty.
