Where the side panels bolt (screw) to the front cowl, the nut for the screws looks like a small neoprene gromet, with a threaded insert.
A shallow donut with a groove around the circumference which allows it to be pressed into the cowl
and remain with the cowl when the screw is removed.

Had the bike (2000 VFR800) for a few weeks. Have taken care of the oil, coolant and headlights.
On reassembly of the panels I find several of these little gromet nuts are missing.

I'm not even sure what they are called. Bike Bandit calls them "nut" or "body clip", however not good enough description to know what you are getting (for $4 apiece).

Dees anyone have a replacement or alternate source for these ?
Eventually I'll make something happen. Well nut, Rivnut, speed nut etc. but it will probably mean a slightly larger hole to retain it.
This would preclude ever going back to the stock "nut" .

This is a really good running VFR. I'm not going to sideline it for a few bucks worth of
    unobtainable fasteners.

go to servicehonda.com and you night get them a little cheaper. I recommend just buying a half dozen or so. Over the years, you will end up using them.

When I got my 2000 VFR I also needed a few of those well nuts. I checked around on the net and they were about $4 for the well nut and the corresponding screw to go with them. After figuring out the cost of shipping to Canada (a lot of companies offer free shipping on orders of $50 or more, but only to US) it was just as much as going to the dealer for them. Normally I would purchase over the net since the dealers charge a lot more for most stuff, but in this case, it was cheaper and easier to ride 10 minutes to the dealer and pick them up since they carry them in stock. The dealer charged me less than $6 each and that was the combined price for the well nut and screw, so for the sake of time it was worth the cost. Just my 2 cents.
