Ok, this will propably mean shit to anybody that is not from Australia, but this is riding at its best.
It is 160K's from my place to Broke in the Hunter Valley, where I spent a great two days kids free with my wife (first time in six years).
The road is not used very much by general traffic, and I didn't see a truck either way all weekend.
The surface is one of the few roads near Sydney that is smoooooooth and wide enough to push the limits.
Lots of 35, 45, and 55 K corners to make it outright fun, with lots of long stretches of high speed touring.
My wife did mention that she didn't like the 40 or so k's of tight stuff as she found it hard work holding on under brakes, but I have to admit, she was relaxed enough for me to move around freely in my seat without feeling her behind me.
Cliff on one side, creek on the other, rainforest canopy and a superb surface road that you can push to your own limits without having to think of other traffic.
The only scary bit was coming out of a left mid speed corner setting up for a right with no room to spare, when a four wheel drive came from the the other way on the wrong side of the road, If we had been there a second earlier, we would not be here today.
Ride safe, ride fast , have fun.

The Putty has some fun twistie bits ( was last on it mid week 2 weeks ago ) but its main problems are its speed limts are underposted and weekends are over policed for its quality.

The Oxley is better, at least when its surface is good the 41kms of continual tight twisty stretch of the Oxley hwy to Gingers Creek is much better, 100kph posted and infrequently policed but its main negatives is the 500 odd kms for me to get there from Sutherland via Broke, Gloucester, Thunderbolts, Walcha AND 50/50 whether the road surface is billiard table smooth or has been destroyed by floods and Semi trailers.

I love the Putty road, but I have to say, I'm getting pretty pissed off with bike riders that have a death wish. The are quite a few prangs on that road between bikes, either head on's or hitting another bike side on. Some of those corners are good & many use the whole bloody road. Logging trucks & tourist's are bad enough. I often see the police on it trying to increase the state revenue. Week days are the best time.

Last time I rode the Putty was in 2009. The Halfway House had suffered a fire and was closed. Has it reopened, or has it passed into the fog of history?

It has reopened my friend, and it is much better then it was.
There is also a new one opened up a further 10km's towards broke.
Haven't been there, but plan to check it out soon.
