If you apply a little strip of duck tape, not gorilla tape, to where the bungee chords or nylon straps meet the paint, the cords will rub on the tape and not the paint. Carefully peel the tape off in the sunshine or with the aid of a hair dryer, then clean off the tape residue with acetone or even wd40, then it should not be a problem. To just rip the tape off, you will risk pulling off the paint. An alternative to that is to place soft cotton or synthetic cloth in behind. Problem with that is, dirt and grit works its way under there and causes abrasions. And you have to keep checking to make sure the cloth is in place.

But this is a bit of a mute subject if he is getting the saddle bags as well now. They come with foam rubber backed pads to cover the rear fairings and heat shields. But they too can gather grit in behind. I know this for fact. Stop arguing with me or when you ever come here, I am going to drown you in Granville Island Brockton IPA. Little shit!

    Surfer,

Check out this thread. My photos and writeup are in post # 7. lgn001's bracket as described in the post 5 is an interesting bracket and he did a nice job of that. I was going to make one, well I actually tried, but it has been quite a number of years since I used a pipe bender and I ended wasting a length of aluminum conduit. Like I said, I found that you don''t need to take any precautions other than what I did. I have rode from Canada to south central California three times now with my set up without any problems.

When I put the factory bags on I didn't put that plastic thing on either. Bit cleaner, better looking.

Hey Randy I got the bags. Thanks for all the info. I posted some pics on that thread as to how I decided to attached them (under the seat). The thing I like about that set up is that the bags are locked by the seat lock. As far as seat availability a passenger can sit there without the straps being up their butt, or you can put the seat cowl without scratching it. I like the bags, they are very roomy with the expansion zipper.

Hey don't need to buy a fender eliminator or cut the rear fender.
All I did was removed the steel support bracket from inside the fender, cleaned it up and painted it mat black and bolted it all back without the plastic fender.
Just needed to make a couple of spacers to allow for the loss of the plastic guard.
Worked out well and no changes to the standard parts so it can be put back to normal really easy.
    Cheers
    Phil

When I had my plate horizontal between the OEM cans I got cited for "obstructed plate"

    Then I mounted it vertical

Then I cut the cans 4" shorter and reverted back to horizontal.

Its all pretty easy to do. I picked up the small LED strip from Autozone and wired it to the OEM wires.

    A. Duct tape is manufactured to be permanent. Fixing ducts. Gorilla tape is the HMFIC on the block. Gaffers tape much like duct tape is not permanent and leaves no residue. Over stick on graphics ya takes your chances with any of them.

    B. Is Grumpy's Weenie Wagon something we should know more about? Is that spelling correct? Is it legal in some places?

To those that removed the mud guard (assembly A) do I really need to take the back cowl out or is that step in the service manual because they are also removing the shock guard (assembly B) page 2-17.

No need to take off back cowl. And, they do make a rear hugger fender for the vfr800.

I have the same plate setup on mine. (Except that mine is in the much faster Silver)

I like the look, however, the LEO's here in Ontario have mentioned to me that they can't see all of the plate when driving in the next lane. I'm still trying to find the downside of that...

If you're out in the rain the tail light will get dirty but a quick swipe with the gas station squeegee takes care of that.
Best part is that it's free!
