Hello all, wondered if I could ask a question about my air box.

All over the net are things relating to air box mods on the vfr. I want to disable my flapper and possibly de-snorkle the air box on my 5th gen. But...what I can't find is anyone having trouble with rain, or dirt getting into the extra hole.

So am I likely to run into problems if I ride in a bit of wet weather?

Also, by disabling the flapper the idea is to let more air into the airbox? But the little doorway under the flapper valve is closed. So surely it wont open if I block the line!?

    Thanks all

Re the snorkel Mod, took mine out for 3000kms while it does sound cool with it out and may ? increase top end found it made bottom to lower mid range feel fluffy.

i have had my air box open since jan 2009. it sounds great and no loss in power anywhere. no problems with dirt or water either. just order your self a pipercross air filter and do it all at once.

Amazing that Honda spends all this money on expensive airbox bullshit when there's free horsepower waiting right there for you if you just throw it in the trash.

Here we go again indeed ;)
Thanks for the advice all. I'm not concerned too much with power gain or loss. If I was I would throw a power commander in there. Just want to free her up a bit for now. Shall pull a couple of things off and check in a week or so if any rubbish has got in.

Yeah, here we go again because a legion of VFR owners (and others) post up this mod does "something" with no emperical evidence that it does!?

Lets just take it to its nect logical, or I should say illogical, step and discuss how adding Slick 50 and 93 plus octane gas will give you that 3-5 extra HP we all want:wink:

Like Tink said, all that free HP just waiting for us shadetree mechanics to unleash from those unknowing Honda engineers.

It is fun to speculate. What the hell else are we going to talk about? And, since I am a pro speculator type, what if the snorkel is only there for noise abatement? If that is the case, then the engineering case was not about power but about passing a noise test. Removing it definitely increases intake noise. If you like intake noise (I loved it when the 4 barrel kicked on my brother's 68 Impala), then it may give you a more thrilling riding experience.

As far as every bike coming with optimum settings right from the factory, that is just not true. My old Bandit 1200 had 10-15 hp in it from an airbox hole, K&N and a jet kit. It was delivered for EPA standards.

On the 6th gen, the door is open when there is no vacuum. Is it different for the 5th gen?

They come out with their nuts clipped so they pass emissions/ noise regulations, I think we all agree on that. But there are legit performance mods and farkles you can do, and the flapper mod (AKA randomly undoing a vacuum line) does not qualify.

For the record, my snorkel is intact. I have deflappered it because I hated the sound of it flipping open and closed. I do not recall whether it improved the throttle response but it must not have hurt anything because I left it. I am thinking about hooking it up again just because I like to tinker.

I said I like "to tinker" not "you Tinker". But, hey I am sure I would like you just fine, too.

Well well well...why did I not do this before.
Now like I said, I'm not concerned too much with power gain or loss...if I cared so much I would not only install a power commander, I would also lose weight and not eat that bacon sandwich for breakfast before riding to work.

BUT! Ripping that straw (sorry! Snorkle) out the airbox and plugging the flapper tube thingy, I have noticed a hugely better throttle responce in the low revs. Feels less...catchy. Of course it sounds better which is a bonus...for me not my neighbours.

After looking I noticed the flapper door was always open and plugging prevents it from closing. i didn't get that bit first time round. But you can see a bit more dirt behind that than behind the snorkle. So I will need to check the air filter a bit more often in case it gets dirty too quick for my liking.

    Thanks all.

No need to get into desperate measures. Bacon is important.
