I just got on this forum and don't know jack about bikes, but I'm having one problem with my '86 vfr700. I will be riding on the freeway and it will start to lose power, cut out or feel like the tanks low on gas and I have to pull over and turn the key off and wait several seconds and it starts back up again. Feels like there's no fuel in the lines or something. And this only happens when I'm on the freeway. Buddy said it's probably the fuel pump relay. Any idea's?
Other than that it runs perfectly fine.

Clogged fuel filter, or bad fuel pump, or bad fuel pump relay.

Is there rust in the tank? That could clog the filter, or even clog the screen inside the tank. Have you tried chaning the filter? If you buy a clear filter you can inspect it as needed.

You can do a flow test on the pump, by jumpering the relay. The manual should list how much fuel should come through in 30 seconds or a minute, and you can measure this.

I don't know how to test the relay, especially if the problem is intermittent. Maybe someone else will know.

As long as you don't drop the bike or run it below about 1/3 of a tank, it will gravity feed, you could just buy some generic fuel hose and bypass the fuel pump altogether, see if the problem goes away, this would help you isolate the fuel pump and relay for troubleshooting purposes.

I removed the fuel pump on my '85 Vf700 and all was well, until I filled the tank and tried to run it down. I experienced the same symptoms that are described here. The tank cap vent would not vent easily enough. When I pulled the vent assembly out of the cap and tried to blow/suck through it, it required quite a bit of suction to get it to "pop" open. Gravity alone would never produce the amount of suction required to open the vent. I had to remove the small clear diaphram from the vent assembly and re-install it. Now, all is well. I filled the tank this weekend and there was no cap leakage, so the remaining "baffles" in the cap and the vent assembly are good enough to do the job.
Warning: The baffle assembly is not supposed to come apart, so you will have to pry it apart with a small screwdriver to break the 3 small plastic pins that hold it together to get to the diaphram.

I wonder if you have a blocked tank vent? That's another possibility here.
