My 2000 VFR has the shunt type R/R, model SH 579C-12. I replaced the battery recently due to age / wear - it was failing. Checked R/R connections and they look clean and do not imply any undue wear or excessive heat. Checked voltage at battery, as follows:

    12.3 v bike off
    rises to 13.3 - 13.5 at idle
rises to 14.7 and holds absolutely steady at 5K rpm

Nothing seems to be wrong. Should I replace the R/R unit with one of the preferred models, or leave well enough alone?

    Thank you,

    John

You do have the "old" non upgraded R/R and for the moment it seems to be working fine, and I dont like to tell someone to replace a good working part. (Can if you want to though) --- I am guessing that somewhere in the future anyhoo, it will eat it.
That said, typically the R/Rs dont go out suddenly and for now its worth your money to add a voltmeter up front so you can watch the trend of how your charging system is working. Then if you see something is going south, you have time to plan what to do.

Here's a pic of the voltmeter on mine. -- Voltmeter setup are cheap, I probly spent 40 bucks on it. There are cheaper options still on ebay.

I like your new avitar Ice-Hunchin  How is Barf-Ah-LoW???

FH units are better as they shunt the excessive voltage to earth differently than the SH units.

I agree with Mello, I'd run a volt gauge and keep an eye on it. It will fail you and leave you stranded at some point.
My R/R died 4 days after I bought the bike. I have the upgraded stocker with the VFRness now. I also have a ebay volt gauge to keep an eye on things.
