Welcome and congrats. The 2000's look really good yellow. Mine is red but it's a 93. It's exactly the bike I would get if I wanted a replacement.

Good look'in bike Dan. I am rather partial to the Yellow Viffer myself. Like you I rode bikes built from bits in boxes. For me this IS the nicest bike I have ever owned and I am enjoying it immensely.

    Hey Dan,

You seem like a pretty tall guy. For reference, I am over 6' and I have Heli bars and a GIVI touring windscreen. The reach is much more bearable with the Heli bars and the wind hits me just at the chin in a nice, smooth flow with the taller windscreen. Very little turbulence. Of course, I always wear earplugs too, which helps.

2000 VFR also here. PO had it professionally painted silver, which I grew to like.

6'00", Corbin seat, Genmar risers, 10mm down in the triples and 25mm up on the Penske in the back. Wind noise was never an issue with the stock screen and the Genmars. With the suspension set up the way it is, it handles much less truckish and more sporty...but the Penske makes it ride like a Cadillac. Strongly suggested.

I hear you about grad school. Glad I have my degrees but would never do it again if I knew then what I know now. I haven't experienced the "big payoff" I've been promised - yet.

    Hi again,

Three hundred miles later and I am lovin' this bike! However there are some 'used' bike issues to sort out, the first of which is that the headlamps burned out. I mean, the left one WAS burned out, and then the right one gave up the ghost when we fiddled with it. They appear to be an H4 halogen but the one on the left is definitely NOT an H4 as the tabs are not spread nearly as far apart as the original bulb. There's an H4 on the right socket but I cannot pull the wire socket off the back of the bulb to extract it. My fear is that someone buggered up the socket to make it fit.

So, I'm going to search for solutions on the website as soon as I'm done typing this.

In other news, the front tire goes flat in about a week, but when it's properly inflated the engine goes from 0 - 100 in about eight seconds, and combination highway/city/hooning fuel economy is right at 49 smiles per gallon.

It's also Yellow and the neighbor swears that the bike looks like it's breaking the speed limit even when it's on the centerstand. ;)

Oh, and I "like" the quiet-ness of the exhaust 'cause I can hear that wonderful gear whine! My first accessories will be a higher windscreen and some handlebars. That, and a new helmet.

Lastly, are the motors of YOUR VFR's feeling a bit chunky when cruising in 5th gear at 30MPH and 2500 RPM? Mine tends to feel a bit notchy and turns require a shift to third for smooth acceleration when in town. Is it asking too much for smoothness from idle to 11,000 RPM? I find most of my daily shifting occurs at about 6000 RPM or so. It might just be the nature of the engine, which is perfectly okay. Certainly 60 MPH is the sweetspot for sixth gear on this bike. It barely takes any throttle at all and whirrs happily down the road.

Yep, I am pretty happy with this bike thus far, I only need to get that tire fixed, the headlamps re-lit, and the ear-ringing turbulence sorted out to make it pretty much perfect.

p.s.: I chopped off the bottom tabs of the headlamps and now they fit just fine. PLUS, I called up HELI bars and ordered me a set for $279 plus shipping. AND a smoked windscreen is also on it's way. AND I found me a new, yellow helmet. It's a bit warm(ish) inside, and I need to convert it back from Snowmobile configuration but I got it cheap and it sports a flip-down set of integrated sunglasses, and a flip-up face. It's made by Zoan, and seems decent. I got it because of the removable chin-cape that helps reduce wind noise.

    Plus, it's yellow :)

As far as the chunkiness, these bikes do not like to be below 3 grand, period. If you are lugging around choose a gear that will keep it at 3 grand or more and it will pull away clean. I never take regular street corners in 3rd either. try 2nd, you will like it, hehe

Just as REAL Kawasakis are GREEN, REAL Hondas are RED. Hell....I bet a red VFR is a half second quicker in the 1/4 mile than a yellow one....
I like the yellow though, looks good ;)

Clipping the bottom tabs off an H4 bulb to get it to fit the housing is standard practice around here. Just be carefull with your trimming. Trimming off too much can cause the bulb to sit a little off in the housing and cause headlight aiming issues.

The VFR engine is a little chunky below 3k rpm, but it was not built to run that low anyways. It is not your bike in particular, they are like that. However, it's smooth as a sewing machine after that, if a sewing machine revved to 11 grand and made 100 bhp.

I highly suggest an aftermarket exhaust. I have a Delkevic 14" high mount on mine and not only is it massively lighter than the stock 13 lb exhaust, the sound is addictive. Just saying...

    Congratulations on your purchase. Enjoy.

    Another update,

I just took the Corbin beetle hard saddlebags into the body shop where they are going to do a fiberglass repair and repaint on the one case. The other one, they suggested I take home and simply scrub with mineral spirits to get all the stuck-on duct tape goo off from it, and guess what? It cleaned up to look almost new!

Then, as an extra pleasant surprise, I called up Corbin, told them about the locksets being broken, and they shipped me a pair of replacement lock sets with keys for just $22 including shipping. Sweet customer service! These were some unattached saddlebags that the seller tossed into the deal for free because they looked so nasty. It turns out they should be functional for oh, probably only a few hundred bucks for the R&R of the right one that suffered the road scraping. It appears the hardware is all there too, but I won't know for sure until I try and mount them. The goal is to have the bike ready for a cruise to Northwestern University in northern Illinois sometime in August.

Thanks for everyone's help, by the way. This is a nice bunch of folks here on VFRworld.

I would recommend the Zero Gravity Double Bubble windscreen to help with the turbulence. Plus it looks great! I have one on my bike.

Here are a couple pics of my 2006 with Convertibars installed. The first shows the amount of rise/reach available while the second shows the difference between high and low posititon. I've added some spacers that move the master cylinders forward about 7mm and as a result have even more rise/reach/hand angle adjustment available.

Nice bike. Once the beetle bags and seat cowl go on it will look perfect like mine :)
One question. Is getting the VFR into the Avalanche an easy proposition? Did you use a long ramp? I woud think the lower fairing would catch with a standard size ramp.

Myself and a couple guys pushed my 6th gen easily into the back of my 3/4 ton GMC no problem at all. But it did not go in worth a shit when I first tried to ride it up there. Another long and stupid story.

I have ATV ramps that have a slight curvature at the top end of the ramp that make a bit of difference. Then again, the back of a 3/4 ton is probably a few inches higher than an Avalanche or a 1/2 ton.

A word of advice though if you are going to be hauling a bike in the back of a pick up often. Don not put it on the centre stand. The bouncing around puts too much weight on a confined area of the stand and will dent the bed of your truck. Better strap it with the weight taken slightly off the side stand and placed mostly on the wheels of the bike.

Also, put a piece of 2 X 10 between the front tire, and the bulk head of your p-u box. Believe it or not, you will bend that bulk head because you have strapped this heavy bike, tire against bulk head. On most p-u trucks, there are formations in the inner liner of the box for exactly this purpose. I cannot say for sure that the Avalanche has this though.

Thanks Randy. I have one of those wheel chocks that grabs the front wheel and only requires straps from the passenger pegs to the front. Works very well and was only about $50 at Princess Auto. I have an International Terra which is like a long bed Scout and the bed is way up there. I was hopeing to have the bike in the bed and tow a vintage travel trailer. Sounds like that may not work out.

Congrats on the bike. Nice colour by the way. I think it has been scientifically established that yellow is the fastest.
