    Bite your

I used to pay 300-350 for a brain bucket, latest one I gots, was 600 or 650, I felt I needed to go to noggin therapy for spending that much for a skid lid, but as the above poster sed, "You dont wana skimp out on your most important asset." I remember a saying about a pair of 20 dollar shoes lasting a year or two, but a pair of 200 dollar shoes lasting a life time. I have resouled a pair of Bates Boots numerous times and am happy as a pig in shit, matter of fact, I bought a new pair. A brain bucket is the puncuation, end of story, you could be riding a shit box, but if you have a hot-shit helmet on, the world (at least the riding world) knows you got some style. Sheesh, I am a slave to stlye, performance, sophistication. Sounds like a fucking Ducarti advert. :flip: them ....fuckers....

All good advice....the deals are out there...just start looking....used anything taken care of is great but what was said earlier...buying a used helmet is like buying used dirty underware. They say your helmet should be replaced every 5 years or so

IMO underwear should be changed even more often. The only caveat would be collector skivvies.

Wha ????? Why would that be frowned upon ? If the equipment is complete & in good order (both inside & out in the case of outer clothing) then there is nothing wrong with it. Too many people waste huge amounts of money on NEW Baby stuff !

As far as riding gear goes, there are only a couple of issues with secondhand stuff. One buy it in person, you get to meet the previous owner & having seen the enormous variations in personal hygene of the human race, I'd only buy in person. The other concern is Gloves & Boots, they are OK, but are best treated to some sterilising agent before you wear them. Take alochol hand wipe gel when going to try stuff & clean your hands after gloves. You don't want to pick up someone elses bugs !

Lots of great stuff is bought in this world, rarely used & then sits idle until sold, so often secondhand stuff especially leathers can be a few years old & hardly worn & in like new condition, so don't be put off.

Used lids are a definite no-no. Not ever. Each year the UV breaks down the lining just a bit more, the cuiions become conformed to the original wearer, and who knows if it's ever been dropped.

How much is your brain worth?

Most helmets now a days have replaceable liners and if dropped there will be chipped paint or a crack most likely. So I think it would depend on how old the helmet is and whether it's worth buying a new liner for it. I personally wouldn't buy a used helmet if it has been worn for a while, but if the seller bought it and never really wore it, it might be an option. I've seen quite a few "new in the box" category helmets for sale, either it was bought and never worn or worn only a few times due to fitment or other reasons. YMMV

Ya what he said---also remember reading that your own sweat has allot to do with breaking down the liners .

I just saw a deal on Cyclegear that if you buy a BiLT Explorer jacket you get helmet, pants, boots, and gloves fo fwee! Don't know alot about this particular brand but haven't seen it bashed like Shinko tires. And if you don't want this helmet sell it on CL for $50-75 to further offset the cost.

Waterproof Adventure Touring Package - Cycle Gear

The next thing you need after a decent jacket and helmet are boots. I've seen several simple crashes yield severely broken ankle areas with crappy boots, and several crashes including some of my own where good boots resulted in walking away.
