just did some mxs on my VFR. Lowered the bike by rotating the triangle one hole to the right from the sprocket side. Oil change, changed coolant to Evans, lowered front forks by 10mm, installed new pegs and adjusted pedals. Put the bike up on its center stand to do one last ops check and once over. Decided to put it in gear and wax chain. I noticed it was making noise and jumping. Chain is tight, but has some slack. Chaine is waxed every 5-6oo miles. Bike and chain have 6K miles. You can see it and hear it at the link below. Any help is appreciated.

    :welcome:

It ALWAYS helps to state the mileage on your bike. A good-quality chain lasts about 20,000 miles, and worn chains usually have a series of tight and loose sections. Adjusting must be done at the tightest spot.

The chain seem to be tight and sound like there are kink on the chain
As squirrel man said how old is the chain ? You might be able to make some adjustment and lube them well for some more miles

Thanks for the info about chain adjustment at the tightest spot. Mileage and chain mxs was annotated on Utube, but I did put it on here as well.

Mine does the same thing. Worn out chain, brand new chain and sprockets, loose chain, tight chain - it makes the same clunking noise jumping chain action. It drives smooth otherwise. I was wondering if it's something in the transmission-chipped gear tooth or something. Figure I'll fix it if it gets worst or completely fails assuming it doesn't cause something catastrophic! :faint:

I believe noise could be chain running free without a load amplified by the drive train slack (sprocket ware, cush drive ware, engine idle pulse consistency, etc)
are all causes of the chain slapping, try putting some resistance using the back brake lightly pressed and see if it goes away. I have a pit bull stand and like to adjust the chain with someone sitting on it that is close to my weight (I can't mention my wife here as she would get mad...lol).

    good luck.

The chain looks to tight to me, too. I generally shoot for about 1" or slightly more of free play, or enough slack that the lower run of chain can easily be pressed up to touch the bottom of the swing arm. With chain adjustments, erroring on the loose side is always better. Over tightening a chain will generate heat and drastically reduce the lifetime of the chain and sprockets.

Thanks everyone for the inputs. 3/4 was with someone of my weight on the bike. I wasnt aware of the chain roller and I believe I will look into that for this and my other two chain drive bikes. I have adjusted the chain and it is now 1 1/2 with someone on the bike. ... but it still makes the noise...just not when I am on it riding it. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks again.

    Hello,

With regards to the measurements I took after adjusting the chain with someone on the bike It shows that with 3/4 of an inch FREE play it was NOT too tight as some had suggested. Same with the most amount of free play at 1.5inches....that measurement would be the most free play one would run. BOTH settings caused the noise. These show that while the chain is set just right and to the most loose setting...it still made the noise. So it was not the tension on the chain that was causing the noise.

So what was the problem you may wonder.... I went to change the sprocket/chain set and noticed the drive chain guide plate was snapped in half. I have no idea HOW, but I changed it obviously. No noise with stock chain now. So I kept the new DID 530 chain for later.

    Thanks to everyone.
