Went for a ride with the wife last weekend. She really prefers having the backrest on when we ride, which is why I bought the Corbin in the first place. But I don't care that much for the look of it when installed. It's not hideous, I just prefer the bike without. So I went to remove the backrest when we got home...no problem. Went to put the seat back on and it wouldn't latch! WTF?? So I look in there with a flashlight and the latch mechanism seems to be hanging down. I did have my lockset replaced at the dealer under warranty and I know from past experience this particular tech is a dumbass (long story). So I'm thinking maybe he just left the latch bolt loose. I look closer and realize it's not loose...it's in pieces, because I can see a spring laying in there by itself. Part of the latch is "real steel" and part is pot-metal. So I fish some of the parts out with a magnet, but the rest have to come out with a claw pickup, since they're non-ferrous. Here's what I pulled out...

    IMAG1484.jpg

The service manager at the dealer agreed to order the part without me making a special trip there just to show him...yup...it's broke...if I emailed him a pic of the broken latch, so I did. Ya know, I've owned several new bikes over the years and have found out the hard way that all my local dealers absolutely SUCK for service! I had a really good thing going with my local Yami dealer when I had my FJR under warranty. I'd bring the bike in and show them the problem. Then I'd go home, remove the bad parts, and bring those parts back to the dealer. They'd give me the new parts, get paid for installing them, but I'd install them myself. It was a win-win for me. I got the parts for free (as I should), but didn't have to let those idiots work on my bike. Hoping I can work a similar deal here, but only time will tell. One thing for sure...if they insist on doing the work themselves, I'll insist they have a different tech work on my bike.

I have found very few mechanics that work on other bikes like their own. I do 90% of my own work and the 10% goes to a independent that knows his shit. Under warranty issues I'd be fukt as well.

Good luck with. I'd be ticked as well

I know the feeling!! My worst nitemare happened a couple weeks ago.
I've taken the fairings off around 10 times. I didn't wanted to take it to the dealer who has never taken the fairings apart on a vfr1200. A few weeks ago, I stopped by the service department and was told that they finally took someone's 1200 fairings apart. Like clock work, I had a blinking lite and took the fairings off to see if anything was visiably wrong. Couldn't find anyting off. Put the fairings back together and took it in.
When I got the bike home, I took off the fairings to see what was done. Yup, 1 of those tiny tabs at the bottom of the side fairing that attaches to the middle radiator cowl was bent backwards. When I bent it back straight, SNAP...damn it.
I'm hoping it was from when they were putting the fairings back on and didn't notice. Hate to think they saw what they did but decided to say anything. Fairings went back together seemlessly and what's done is done, so I didn't make an issue of it.
BUT FOR NOW ON, I will be taking the fairings off for them and putting them back on. This was something that I always thought about after the first time I took mine off. Are they going to be as careful as I am?? NO, they won't!

Well, balls, I was able to re-assemble mine as soon as I rigged up a new spring cause I couldn't find the one that was supposed to be in it. Sucks that happened, at least the shop seems to be working with you to correct the problem. Good luck sir!

So far it's just lip service and I know they're good at that. It took them over a month to get my new lockset, even though a friend at Honda verified it was available in the local warehouse. I guarantee I won't wait that long again...I'll go elsewhere.

Hm. Discovered some months ago that my Corbin wouldn't latch either. Careful inspection showed that the Corbin hook is too thick. Filed it down some and now it latches perfectly. Corbin never sent me a back rest (not that I need one but it comes with the seat) and more than 2 years down the road, the leather paint is starting to let go.

Ah well, at least it's comfy.

I actually never really had any trouble latching it...until the latch broke. There is a little trick to getting it in place, but not as bad as the stocker. Once in place it always latched (and unlatched) first try.

I never had any trouble before either. One thing I soon abandoned was their stupid way of plugging in the heater fuse & connector. Just do away with your OE fuse box cover and put our rain cover on!
Next time I picked up the bike from the dealer, guess what wasn't connected...

Obviously, I now have my fuse box cover back on.

Putting the seat on is a piece of cake if you've done it a few times. But I did take at least a full millimeter out of the hook, if not 2.

F-Mike Corbin, his seats suck along with his boots that they sell! Awful customer service too, I had to shim the last corbin seat I had on a Nighthawk, I had a busted side panel which American Honda warranteed since it was a new bike at the time. The Service Advisor was surprised since it was an aftermarket seat which they could have used as a basis to not warranty the plastics, I told him that I tawk a good game...

You were lucky to get the seat off period. Crazy things happen, trust me...

I tell you what. I have not taken a vehicle to a shop in over 10 (maybe even 15) years. I do all my own work, unless there is a very serious reason why not. I had to get help with smog on my RV. They listened to what I said and did EXACTLY what I asked. Then their recommendations were spot on. That is now the only shop in town I will go to. Normally .... screw taking anything to a shop. They typically can't match my work quality. ESPECIALLY with my M6.

Major bummer DD, especially after having your bike all sorted out.

Not a huge deal as I'm still riding the bike. It just sucks that I can't get any service from the selling dealer and all my other "local" dealers are a logistical pain to get to.
