My 98 with almost 30k on it , owned since 6500, has always taken at least two or three tries to get running first start of the day(40-65 degrees F).
So it's not really a "cold" start. New plugs in Jan, new bat last month, digital voltmeter always at 13.4 at 5000, 14.4 at idle.
I know it's not a choke just a idle speed increase lever-- same as opening the throttle a bit.
I've tried full choke, half choke, no choke, and full choke with a bit of throttle, full choke seems the way to go.
    Cranking plenty fast enough IMO.
On full choke, crank just barely start, stall, crank run at low rpm stall, third crank start and slowly(5sec or so) climb up in rpm and in about 6/7/8 seconds climb right up to about 2000.
    Doesn't seem right to me.
The only way I get to stay running on first try is to use full choke and the instant it justs starts to hit, feather on the throttle. But it tachs up too fast, I don't like doing that to a cold mill.
The rest of the day it starts instantly and runs perfect.
    Normal ?

    thx

When doing this initial start, how long do you wait after the key is turned on before you hit the start button? Are you giving the fuel pump enough time to fully recharge the pressure to the injectors?

Agree with above ^^^as a likely cause. Or maybe a sensor, somewhere ?

No code flashes ?? It's your FI, kid,:nelson: so either get used to it or fix it. As long as it runs fine, you're fine. Try cranking with the run switch off for a few seconds before flipping to run.

If you had carbs, i'd know where to look. :homer:

Thanks for the replies. I wait for fuel pressure to build before starting. Seems to me it's lacking fuel initially.
squirrelman--Carbs, yep easier to troubleshoot. This instance I would guess somewhat clogged pilots. :tea: (too early for beers)
