I just sold my little brother my 96 VFR since I bought a 06. I came home the other day and he was running the battery down by trying to start it. I have no clue what the problem could be. Please help

Did you check for spark or fuel delivery. Those would be your first culprits and the first things to look at.

Ok sorry I do know a little a very little. It has good gas, and the fuel pump is sending a good stream of gas to the engine. I pulled a plug wire and held it (sp) and did not get a anything? wold anyone say that it is the coils? Thank You

My 4th gen won't crank if the switch is off. Check ign fuse. Make sure EVERYTHING is plugged in. Try kickstand up, clutch in, in neutral see if that helps. (Make sure the yellow light goes off when the stand is up.) Sounds like something is loose. Did he have the tail off? Could have unplugged the ign module.

Just to clarify, I mean the switch on the handlebar. I can turn the key on and mine will crank but it won't start if I have the switch turned from run to off. Like I said, just a clarification. Mine is a 3rd gen so they may have made a change to the 4th gens.

    It may be simply flooded.
Try this: Choke off, ignition off, bounce the front end up and down by holding front brake and pushing down on the bars. Do this till you get tired and then have your little brother do it till he gives up. Now with the choke in the off position, turn on ignition and run switch, hit the starter button.
4th. gen VFR's can be touchy to start especially after sitting for a while. I picked up this technique from a Honda mechanic and it does work.

check timing and pull a sparkplug and wire, put boot back on plug, lay side of plug next to engine or other metal part and crank over. If you see spark you should think it's timing or fuel problem. If you don't see spark, you have an ignition/electrical problem. Check all fuses and wire connections, you may have bad coils, but that's expensive to just try new ones.

The problem may be what you stated in your opening, the battery is dead.Get a charger and recharge your battery that should get it fired.Buy a charger , charge battery and return charger.lol it works and you dont have to spend the money, and buy the most expensive one you can find for a 12v battery.

Good one V man, was going to say the same thing, make sure the kill switch is in the on position, surprising how many times I've caught folks wondering WTH my bike won't start, then walk over and click :)

okay that said ^ should have read further, yea they don't turn over with the kill switch off, so hmm you've checked fuel and spark? darn things are way to soild to have anything tricky, maybe, how long has it been sitting? did it run last week now not today? I'd be heading down the path of ignition. then fuel. as with fuel most of the time it'll run, maybe not good, spit and cough. with out spark, there's nothing.

So did they make a change to the 4th gens then? Mine will turn over with the kill switch to off, it just doesn't start.

This is a silly question but the fuel isn't off is it? or try it with it on reserve. Other than that I would go with test the coils and the rest of the ignition. You will need an ohm and a volt meter. I would Buy a clymler manual if you haven't already.

Yep, just checked to make sure, she won't turn over with the switch in the off position.

easiest thing for spark is the obvious, pull a plug and ground it, if it was just a coil then it would start and run real lousy, I'm inclined to think it's in the wiring, is there a fuse just for the ignition? hmm time to pull the shop manual.
