Same as my tire question. What brand/wgt of oil do you all use? What filter do you use as well? I tend to use Castrol GTX and the OEM filter. BTW, Castrol has taken all of my vehicles well north of 100,000 miles, and, on several cars, well over 200,000. So, I am a HUGE GTX fan.

    Hey, Scuba,
Yeah, I kinda of figured I kicked a hornet's nest. What oil do you use? And, a real silly question (no owner's manual with my used VFR), do you check the oil with the bike on the side stand? I know I did with my 3rd gen, but that had no center stand as standard equipment.

I've used just about every brand of oil (both synthetic and non-synthetic) in my motorcycles and the never could tell a huge difference. The bottom line is that most of them will be fine as long as they are not labelled "energy conserving" and you change them frequent enough. I currently use Castrol Actevo semi-sythentic 10w-30 that costs around $7 per quart and have been pretty happy with it but for years I used Shell Rotella non-synthetic 15w-40 that only cost $13 a gallon from Wal-Mart and never had any issues. I just can't justify paying so much more for premium synthetic like Mobil-1. Oil level should always be checked on a level surface with the bike on the centerstand. The service manual should be available for download on this site and the other VFR webiste (vfrd.com)

There is another thread on the forum, among many about oil, where a member (DaHose) posted some good reading on oil and oil filters. I believe in one of the articles it showed that the Purolator oil filters performed really well and are about $6.50 at auto parts stores.(PL14612/PL14610). Also in these articles was how the different oil types, "Dino", Synthetic, Dino-Synthetic blends hold up. Long story short, as Rollin said as long as you change it regularly and that you do not use an "energy conserving" type, you probably won't know the difference, except how often you have to change your oil. Synthetic oils can stay in longer than the Dino based stuff, some vehicles have 10k-15k oil change intervals due to full synthetic use.

With that, I am using Honda HP4 (10w-40) in my '09 and Rotella T6 Synthetic (5w-40) in the '01 but both have the Purolator oil filter now. Why the difference? I just recently bought the '01 after I did the oil change on the '09 (where I put in the same type as the last oil change), and with the '01 I wanted to try the synthetic so I picked up the Rotella. To add to the confusion, my Duc has Mobile 1 as I didn't do the last service on this bike myself but I will probably go with the Rotella T6 synthetic next time being that it's already using a synthetic.
