I'll tell you a little story.
I was solo riding on a local dirty mountain road ( salted, sandy road, here they try everything to melt snow after winter).
I heard the barking of many dogs. I hurried up to make a full turn to avoid those selvatic beasts searching for a prey.
Put my right foot in the wrong path. I fell down with my Daytona over me. I was UNABLE to do anything, but SHOUTING THE HELL OUT OF ME WITH DEMONLY RAGE to have done such an idiocy, breaking fairings, mirror, windshield and finding myself trapped. Believe me or not, dogs approached, howled at me, then went away worried.

I ALWAYS PUT MY TWO FEET DOWN, JUST LIKE A NEWBIE, EVEN AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS.

Left foot down, bike in first gear, right foot on rear brake, and one eye on the mirror checking your 6o'clock.

Waiting in neutral at a stoplight is something i've always AVOIDED; and when i saw some dumb bitch in a Bronco coming up to a light and she didn't see me, i was able very quickly to make a forward move to greatly lessen the impact and avoid serious injury. In neutral, you can't move anywhere and are sitting in the road like a sack of potatoes, defenseless.

As Alaskan stated: "If I am at a stoplight on the VFR I'll either leave it in 1st (because I am always looking in my mirror for the idiot driver who might plow into me)......." In a case like that, waiting in gear can save your life !!~!

I do two feet down. I try to keep it in 1st gear so you can maneuver away quickly if someone comes up to fast behind you. Sometimes I'll put it in neutral if I need a stretch.
