Anyone ever had your OEM bags painted?

Apparently the OEM blue ones for the '07 RWB are on backorder till Feb '13, according to my dealer. And even then, they are running.....nearly $1k here locally. A quick email to David Silver Spares in the UK tells me that the blue ones are $1091 + $17 shipping, but the red ones and black ones (from previous years) are only $399 + $17 shipping.

Was thinking about the differences (if any) besides the color...same size, same mounting manner, no matter the year? Also...anyone know the "official" name of the blue color, and and have any other tips or had this done before?

Looks like since it's just the lid that's painted, I could separate them and drop them off @ a local paint shop...and save $700. Unless there is anything I'm missing....

There was just a thread on here earlier this week where someone had done that in blue. They said it ended up costing them $400. Give Mason City Honda a shot. I paid $873 for mine and it had free shipping.

I picked up a set of panniers on ebay for $300 recently & had them painted by a mate who has his own shop. Lid is all that needs painting...bit of a pita to get off tho. Ended up drilling a small hole opposite where pins are pressed in & tapping out with a small nail. Had a Quote from another shop to paint them candy red for $400 ....mate charged me $100. Gave him my seat cowl to match paint colour & match was perfect.

I painted mine myself. The paint and clearcoat alone was $200.

Did you paint right over the factory paint, scuff it first, or what? I've got a brand new 120A black top case and I've got the 170 black (2006) paint on my bike and side cases. Planning on painting this winter, but could use some advice on what is needed to make it look perfect.

Yeah, I sanded it down (last round of sanding using 1000 grain sandpaper, I think, it's been a few years) then sprayed primer before painting it. The clearcoat is tinted so the number of coats will affect the color. I did two coats of paint and two coats of clear.

Thanks for the advice. I had done some reading, but good to see some results and how it was done on our luggage.

Wish I could have found some 170 code black, but they just don't exist anywhere now (called over 40 dealerships in my hunt)

The PO of my bike bought red factory bags and painted them (poorly) with rattle cans from Autozone. He did a slapdash job but the white paint over the red seemed to cover well and is durable. There are numerous marks where his boot scuffed the paint on the top corner but it didn't chip. The point here is, at a glance you can't tell they used to be red and there is no evidence of flaking paint or chips. So if you are a do it yourself kind of guy or know a painter it should be a straight forward job.

I had a silver set painted blue last year for a 2007 RWB. I think the cases were from a 2008. I bought the cases used from Craigslist and the install instructions say "2002 VFR 800" so I am assuming they are all the same. The paintjob cost me $385 in Sacramento, CA. That was the cheapest price I could find. I am happy that they are blue but the quality of the paintjob was not the best (a few streaks/runs near the edges of the cases.) Plus they are alread scratched due to my foot and people that don't know how to park next to another bike. I wish I would have seen Scubalongs PM offering a trade prior to painting them. The paint came from Colorrite but I can't remember the color name. But I think I found it by searching the board. Also there was some issue with getting this paint in California b/c it wasn't compliant with one of the CA laws but somehow the guy got it. The color match was perfect. They guy who did it was recommended to me by a friend but he runs an auto body shop. You may want to try to find a motorcycle body shop. Most of the paint shops I tried to get a quote from said they would not paint them. The high quote I got was over $800 = YIKES! Good Luck.

I got black vinyl rap for the bags-do not like it- it adds weight and no way to get it from wrinkling, Sop I think I will just say fuk it and get my can of High heat 2000 Rust-oleum in flat black, now I know it won't be perfect-but its only a bag- I can't stand red IMGP0324.jpg :tinfoil3: On a side the the vinyl wrap is good for other things.

Been over two years since the OP thought about having the bags painted so I bet they are finished by now.

Yep. I'm the OP and I ended up buying a RWB one that came with the blue bags, so no painting needed after all.

Well....that certainly is one way to deal with it. I got my used OEM (red) just after this post and had them painted. Had the same shop that painted my bike do the hard bags. I was happy with how they turned out. But the nicks really stick out after all the sue they have been getting. Just about time to get them done again. I think it cost me about $300.00 give or take for the bags only to be sanded, prepped and painted with the pearl white which is more costly than just black red or blue.

I think there are some exceptions to that regulation. I am sure those standards are Canada/USA wide. My painter told me that the pearl white was exempt from that environmental stuff as it is a two part paint. Has not yet, or at least at that time, been replicated in waterbased auto paint.

can of caliper paint$ 8.00-enough for two hard bags. Caliper paint will stick to anything without primer and its 2000 degree paint too. I use it on my car caliper, it doesn't look super sharp, just a dull red, but not bad at all. If it doesn't work too well, I just sand it down and start over. I just can't stand red on a black bike. I did not want to start another thread about bags.:der:
