    Hi guys,

I've been thinking of selling my K1200S and buying a VFR1200 and had a couple of questions. I've read a lot about the first-second gear problems with the 2010, did Honda fix it with the 2012? How about the 2012 DCT version? Any former Beemer owners here? Thanks

I haven't owned a BMW, but I was very interested in the K12/13S before I decided on the VFR1200F. I test rode a 2005 K1200S once and K1300S twice, one was an used 2009 and another 2012 at a BMW demo day at the lcoal dealer. I was of course impressed with the 1300's phenomenal powerband. The '09 had the factory low seat and aftermarket bar risers, which felt just right for my 5'7" frame. Otherwise, the stock ergo was a bit more of a stretch for me, though still more comfortable than the litre sportbikes I've had. Both K1300S engines made this off-throttle buzz that goes away as soon as I get back on the gas, but draws annoyance at stop and go traffic pace. The tranny and gear change had that typical BMW clunk, which I didn't really mind, as the gear shifts are positive and mostly smooth. The shaft drive action is well controlled, though not near as refined as the VFR1200, which is one of the very few shafties that I can shift almost inperceptively from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd. Most other shafties, no matter how much I try, gear lag always jerks the chassis when I roll power back on after the shift, no matter how quick or smooth I tried to work the throttle cut.

I am usually impressed with BMW build quality and general fit/finish, but the VFR1200 is substantially better than the K12/13S in either account. If only BMW had upgraded the K1300S with better mirrors and, say, the instrument panel from K1300GT, I might have reconsidered. Those items just look somewhat out of place for a bike that pushes $20k.

The riding dynamics of the K bike is not necessarily a negative, but it is an acquired taste for a rider that is accustomed to riding a good set of forks.

Overall, both the K bikes and the VFR are the kind of motorcycles that do not immediately impress. They both have qualities and refinements that take some time to appreciate, unlike other bikes that you jump on and go "WOW!" There are a few reviews on youtube that compare these two bikes, and their assessments are pretty accurate based on my own observations. Go test drive - for a long while - to see if the VFR has your favor.

Forgot to answer your question... Yes, Honda implemented Traction Control on 2012+ and did away with the 1st-2nd gear ignition timing retard.

I went thru the same exercise comparing the VFR1200 to the K13S.

The bikes were very similar in almost all ways. The big difference for me was price. Honda gave me a heck of a deal. BMW was expensive and they weren't throwing anything in with the deal.

I bought the Viffer last year. 12k miles later I think I made the right choice. This bike ROCKS! :)

    Good luck!
