    So I had a spectacular failure of the original stock r/r on my 1997 viffer.
    I was riding with a friend who saw the sparks coming off of the bike but he thought they were exhaust pops. IMG_20130410_105348.jpg IMG_20130410_105400.jpg

    Welcome aboard. Do you know for sure if thats the original one? Not challenging you or anything, just if it is, it's 16 years old, can't complain about that.

    I'm not for sure that it's the original to be honest. I know of two other people that owned it before I did since it was new. The second owner had placed a pc heat sink on it which seems to have done the trick for the rest of it's life. As far as the wiring goes the original harness connector piece had already burned out (interestingly enough) at the exact same terminal that is now dead on the input of the r/r.. I took the advice of some other members on this forum to go to wiremybike.com for the PnP harness fix. My guess is that instead of the wiring taking the brunt of the current these thicker 12awg wires were putting full force into the r/r and it just couldn't handle it. At the time of failure the engine was about 7-8k rpm's sustained.

    Not necessarily true.

    Honda
    CBR 1000RR 2004-2007 - Both MOSFET and non-MOSFET available, BEWARE! Cut-n-splice
    CBR 1000RR 2008-> Odd connectors, no plugs available, use spade connectors...
    CBR 600RR 2003-2006 - Both MOSFET and non-MOSFET available, BEWARE! Cut-n-splice
    CBR 600RR 2007-> Cut-n-splice

    BTW, none of these Honda R/R's are actually made by Honda.

    Mello dude has lit the way to a permanent fix.

    In his defense, I was pulling away from him faster than he could keep up, you know, pulling hard like these bikes love to do all the way up the rpm range...and he just couldn't see clearly.

    Ahhhh!!! It's clear now.

    So you were pulling away harder then he could keep up and then he saw all the sparks and thought: "Good! LET IT BURN!!!"
